Inclusion in action! Today, L&I Secretary Nancy A. Walker joined individuals using white canes for a walk from the L&I building to the Capitol to celebrate White Cane Day and honor the independence and achievements of people who are blind or visually impaired. Here in Pennsylvania, @PA_OVR and the Bureau of Blindness and Visual Services (BBVS) help make that independence possible by providing skills, technology, and support to help people live and work confidently. Reminder: Under PA’s White Cane Law, drivers must yield and stop if necessary for anyone using a white cane or guide animal.

Walker stopped by Overlook Park in @ManheimTwp, Lancaster County, to visit high school students gaining real-world job experience through the @PA_OVR MY Work program. All summer long, these students have been rolling up their sleeves – mulching, cleaning up debris, and keeping parks looking beautiful. This program gives students with disabilities the chance to earn a paycheck while building skills and giving back to their communities.

What started in 2016 with just 50 students in Allegheny County has grown into a game-changing opportunity across Pennsylvania. L&I’s @PA_OVR MY Work program connects high school students with disabilities with paid work experiences, helping them build the skills they need for after graduation. MY Work has empowered over 2,000 students since going statewide in 2021 – and its impact continues to grow. 💪🏽

Team OVR rolled into victory at this year’s annual Special Olympics Pennsylvania Bocce Ball Tournament at the Governor’s Residence, hosted by @GovernorShapiro and the First Lady. But Team OVR isn’t just succeeding on the bocce court. Last year, L&I's @PA_OVR helped over 6,000 Pennsylvanians with disabilities find jobs at more than 3,500 businesses.

Through L&I’s @PA_OVR MY Work Program, high school students with disabilities are earning a paycheck, building confidence, and gaining experiences that last far beyond the summer. 10 Pennsylvania college students have kicked off their 2025 paid summer internships at Commonwealth agencies. Thanks to L&I’s @PA_OVR and our partnership with the Office of Administration, this program gives students with disabilities the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the workplace and learn more about careers in public service. Programs like this help support the Governor’s initiative to build a stronger, more inclusive workforce in Pennsylvania.

In partnership with L&I's @PA_OVR, @DeloitteUS hosted a mentoring day for high school students with disabilities, featuring hands-on workshops on resume writing and interview skills. 📝 Students also got the chance to learn from Deloitte professionals about competitive, integrated job opportunities that allow them to chart their own course. 👏Special thanks to the local schools and support programs for participating in this event.

Last week, L&I’s Hiram G. Andrews Center welcomed over 550 students and educators from 16 Pennsylvania schools for the annual Autism Awareness and Acceptance Walk in Johnstown. Governor Shapiro’s proposed budget includes an additional $5 million to support the work of @PA_OVR and the Commonwealth Technical Institute at the Hiram G. Andrews Center, which provides barrier-free education and job readiness programs to Pennsylvanians with disabilities.

@GovernorShapiro 2025-26 proposed budget is paving the way for more Pennsylvanians with disabilities to succeed in the workforce by proposing a $5 million investment in L&I’s Office of Vocational Rehabilitation @PA_OVR. This investment would allow OVR to continue supporting 50,000 people with disabilities with services like career counseling, goal setting, and job placement.

We have an entire office in the Department of Labor & Industry that helps folks with disabilities get in the workforce. It’s called OVR — the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation. This office doesn’t just give workers the skills they need — it actually fosters connections between the 50,000 Pennsylvanians who receive help from OVR and the businesses looking for trained workers. This is something the First Lady herself has worked closely with our teams on at L&I, DCED, and the Office of Transformation and Opportunity. I want to thank the First Lady for her leadership in this space and ask all of you to come together and fund the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation so that work can continue.
