The rays on the Shield Nickel were short-lived. Removed partway through 1867 to improve production, just a few proofs were made with the Rays reverse. This PCGS PR66CAM example is the JD-3 variety—believed to be the rarest of the varieties. It's also one of the finest known.

What if the Trade Dollar looked like this? This 1876 Liberty by Seashore Dollar is one of just five examples made, all struck on Trade Dollar planchets. Never adopted for circulation, it’s become one of the most elusive U.S. pattern issues. In PCGS PR66 , it is the finest-known example, with a PCGS Price Guide value of $115,000.

The 1922 Lincoln Cent shouldn’t exist like this. As the only Mint making Lincoln Cents that year, Denver was under high pressure. Cents without a Denver “D” mintmark emerged, just like in this top pop, Strong Reverse example.

During World War II, the U.S. Mint replaced copper with steel for Lincoln Cents to conserve metal for war. This 1943 Steel Cent is a reminder of that era. It was struck a dramatic 50% off center. It is PCGS AU53.

This is not one cent. It’s actually a Hard Times token from the economic turmoil of 1830s America, reading: “Millions for Defence, Not one cent for Tribute.” Hard Times tokens like this one reflected public sentiment and, by necessity, served as money in daily commerce.

In 1898, British seaman Adolphus Smith rescued the crew of Jennie F. Willey during a shipwreck. He was later awarded a gold United States Lifesaving Medal for his bravery—now preserved in a PCGS holder with its original pinback bar. That’s heroism—struck in gold.

Reaching for the stars since 1776. Struck for the 1876 Centennial Exposition, this gilded medal beautifully captures a young nation’s ambition: Liberty rising, stretching toward stars. Even in America’s historic 250th anniversary, its symbolism still rings true. Happy 250th.🇺🇸

This 1819 Chilean Portales Pattern was proposed as a replacement for Chile’s volcano coinage following counterfeit concerns. Its elaborate design was never adopted for circulation, but it still stuns in PCGS SP62. Read more about the pattern at l.pcgs.com/chile-pattern-x.
