Prolific local shoplifters tend to target smaller community stores, knowing that staff are instructed not to intervene and that, unless there is an immediate threat to someone, it is unlikely to receive an urgent police response. The result is often predictable. In the last few days alone, I have watched a local group of drinkers and drug users walk into shops, fill bags with goods and simply leave on more than one occasion. Regularly, on nearby side streets, you can find the discarded packaging and remnants of their ill-gotten gains. People often blame the police and claim they do nothing, but I am still left wondering what realistic options exist when offenders know the chances of being challenged at the time are minimal, retailers are instructed not to intervene, and the wider criminal justice system struggles to deal effectively with repeat offenders. At what point do we have an honest conversation about whether current approaches are actually deterring this behaviour?
