I understand why you’d think that but he was not elevated by the pro-war element of the party. They fought him hard and continue to. There is a cohort of young people in the U.S. who believe the propaganda they’re raised with and the second they are old enough to enlist, they sign up to fight. It’s awful but with 17 year old boys without fully formed brains it happens. Then some of those people come away from that experience with the harsh realization that they were the bad guys in the situation and that everything they fought for was meaningless or worse. For many that realization is very hard — think about what it means to your soul to accept that reality as true — and take a long time to come to, and often it ends with suicide, homicide, or drinking and pill-popping yourself to death. American imperialism destroys lives on both ends of the gun. If someone can make it through all that, recognize what they did, and commit themselves to smashing that system, they are a massive threat to the war consensus. And Platner has made that commitment. I don’t expect people to take him at his word but I’d say keep an open mind about the possibility and make space for the human condition and experience.
