International project at @QUBGeography to quantify global stocks of pollutants in peatlands and assess their future vulnerability | Funded by @LeverhulmeTrust
Distributions of peatland contaminants remain poorly understood worldwide. The @PIPES_project aims to address this crucial knowledge gap using a global network of sites, including this bog in Co. Mayo, R.O.I.
So many peatlands exist close to industrial hotspots, e.g. blanket bogs at Cave Hill, NI. Their proximity risks high accumulation of toxic pollutants, but peatland contaminants remain poorly constrained worldwide.
The PIPES project aims to address this crucial research gap.
It's #WorldWetlandsDay! In addition to C, peatlands are important sinks for pollutants (e.g., heavy metals). Peatland degradation and decomposition under climatic and ecohydrological change risks remobilisation.
