President Trump said, “The Government Accountability Office …. has estimated annual fraud of over $500 billion in our nation, and we are working very hard to stop it.”
That government office last year estimated that fraud might cost the federal government $233 billion to $521 billion a year, citing 2018 to 2022 data.
Trump made the comment about the fraud after his remarks about creating the Department of Government Efficiency, which he said is headed by Elon Musk.
Trump created DOGE by executive order on his first day in office. Although DOGE has claimed billions in savings, its only public accounting of that savings — a website with a “wall of receipts” — has been riddled with errors.
