After exploring 苏州 Suzhou's canals, the 2026 𝑪𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒂 𝑫𝒆𝒆𝒑 𝑫𝒊𝒗𝒆 program continued its journey in 杭州 Hangzhou. From an engaging lecture by PKU professor Fan Shiming to hands-on encounters with humanoid robots, the delegation experienced both the ideas and innovations shaping modern China. Beyond the classroom, they wandered through tea-covered hills, cruised across the iconic 西湖 West Lake, and explored centuries-old cultural traditions. A visit to a thriving rural community offered a rare glimpse into China's countryside transformation. Their Hangzhou adventure wrapped up with a close look at the future of mobility — and no shortage of unforgettable memories along the way. When English speakers say "rose" and Chinese speakers say "玫瑰," do they mean the same thing? A Peking University team led by Professor Bi Yanchao explored this question using word embeddings from 53 languages, behavioral ratings from speakers of 8 languages, and exploratory multilingual brain imaging data. Published in Nature Communications, the study shows that word meanings are organized along shared neurocognitive dimensions, while differences across languages are associated with climate. From May 17 to 25, the 2026 "Harvard Deep Dive in China—Peking Univ." program brought students from Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) across Beijing, Shenzhen, and Guizhou for an immersive journey through contemporary China. Across factories, classrooms, laboratories, historic landmarks, and mountain valleys, the journey unfolded into a multidimensional exploration of contemporary China. Through conversation, observation, and shared experiences, participants encountered a country far more diverse, dynamic, and layered than any single narrative could capture. May the dialogue continue.

After exploring cutting-edge innovation in Shenzhen, the next stop of the "Harvard Deep Dive in China – Peking Univ." program brought participants to Guiyang, the capital of Guizhou Province. For William, the city's charm came from the combination of old and new: centuries of history, vibrant local traditions, and a modern city full of energy. From a citizen science project to the cover of Nature! ⛈️📖 Since 2016, the "Hail-for-Agate" initiative led by Professor Zhang Qinghong and a team from the Peking University School of Physics has invited the public to collect fallen ice pellets in exchange for agate stones. Now, those community-sourced samples have fueled a major scientific breakthrough. In collaboration with Professor John T. Allen from Central Michigan University, the team utilized a decade of citizen science data to reveal how global warming is shifting hail size distribution and increasing disaster potential worldwide.
