Why Dig Ohio? Archaeology, Geology, and the Human Connection to the Ohio Valley
Join Sarah Hinkelman, Site Superintendent of the Newark Earthworks and Flint Ridge, as she discusses how the unique landscape of the Ohio Valley has shaped human activity for thousands of years, on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room.
By examining artifacts, mounds, and earthworks alongside geological features, soil patterns, and river networks, archaeology and geology work together to reveal patterns of migration, resource use, and cultural change. Ultimately, we will see that the Ohio Valley is more than just a place—it is a dynamic record of human interaction with the environment that shows how people have continuously adapted to and transformed the landscape in ways many of us know little about.
