Not that @Socceroos fans should look too far ahead yet.... but Australia are only the third nation to defeat Turkey in the FIFA World Cup after: West Germany in 1954. Brazil in 2002. In both cases, the team who knockex out the Turks finished up with the Trophy.

When you get to that stage in a Football Manager save where the results start to get just plain odd.

And, as their World Cup gets underway in the early hours of tomorrow morning, a word on Scotland as their 28 year wait to return to the World Cup comes to an end. Scotland, quite rightly come into the World Cup with confidence that this could be the team which create history...

... also sees the pressure on from the get go, as this is the game that Scotland really could do with a win in, if they are going to eclipse the near misses of 1974, 1978, 1982 etc and progress to a knockout tie. Anything less, ups the pressure ahead of two very tricky games...

... to come against Morocco and Brazil.

In a Group which appeared to have a three-horse race for the second spot behind the Swiss, that could prove to be a very important point for the 2022 hosts. Qatar have their first ever World Cup point.

Group B (along with Group G) are not necessarily the most interesting groups on paper, but they are the two groups at this World Cup where a team will advance to the knockout stages for the first time.

The USA's biggest win at the World Cup since 1930 when they beat.... Paraguay 3-0. Both of the USA's three goal wins before today came in 1930 as they opened their World Cup with a 3-0 win over Belgium.

In the case of Italy, Qatar (who admittedly were making their tournament debuts), Japan and South Korea, they like the Canadians had never won a match before hosting the World Cup. In Japan and Canada's case, they lost every World Cup Finals match before playing on home soil.

And whilst, the World's Sporting attention is on North America, there is also another World Cup which gets underway this evening. My predictions for the 2026 Women's @T20WorldCup *With some rather conveniently co-operative weather.

Might be a day into the tournament, but for what its worth, here are my predictions for the @FIFAWorldCup 2026. It'll be very interesting to see how Canada gets on - as of the three co-hosts, they are the ones for whom reaching the knock-out stages will be a great achievement.

Based on my predictions: Four countries: Bosnia-Herzegovina, Canada, Ivory Coast and Egypt will make their first appearances in the knockout stages. Additionally Norway and Australia will equal their tournament best performances of reaching the Last 16.

Based on a similar ratio to 2018 and 2022 - you would expect to see about 6 or 7 red cards in a 104 match World Cup. Worth noting that the most red cards in a single World Cup is 28.
Whilst there are 40 more matches in this World Cup than previous editions: The 2018 World Cup and 2022 World Cup both had four red cards in the entire tournament. This World Cup not even one match old and has already seen three. 🟥🟥🟥

Is 2026 the first World Cup opener to see red cards since 1990?
