I'm happy to be old-fashioned and I probably spend too much of my life living in the past. However, for me, this photo sums up British naval aviation far more than the current generation of RN toys. A Buccaneer, an angled deck with steam catapult, whilst a Wessex stands by...WOW!
Now this is a very skilful pilot...Geoffrey Tyson performing his famous handkerchief picking up, using the wing of his Tiger Moth.
He performed this faultlessly over 800 times, whilst touring airshows in the 1930's. He became a famous test pilot and died peacefully, aged of 79!
Anything a Phantom can do?
I had to look twice at this Tornado photograph, when I first saw it! Those are wingtip vortices (and not dust or debris!), I judge the port tip about 1.5m off the deck...give or take!
