It's officially Nutcracker season here in Seattle at the Pacific Northwest Ballet. Not too long ago,
@besagordon caught up with PNB's (
@PNBallet) Destiny Wimpye, who you can see dancing in the Nutcracker over at McCaw Hall. One of the things she talked to Destiny about is what it means to her to be a Black Ballerina and "What is one misconception about being a ballerina?"
Destiny Wimpye, who is from Atlanta, Georgia, honed her moves at Colburn Dance Academy and Pacific Northwest Ballet School, scoring full rides. Growing up, during the summers, she kept busy at Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Debbie Allen Dance Academy, School of American Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, and even at Chautauqua Dance Program. She kicked off her career with Pacific Northwest Ballet, starting as an apprentice in 2022, and by 2023, she was promoted to corps de ballet.
Recently, when asked what she would tell her younger self, she said, "I would tell my younger self to believe in herself more, to have more confidence in her choices and feelings. Everything will work out for you in the way that things are supposed to. Don't let anyone make you feel like you are less than."
You can see
#DestinyWimpye performing in the Pacific Northwest's Nutcracker over at McCaw Hall from now to December 27th.
