Big Boy Reunion at Steamtown: Top Things to Know Before You Go
1. Plan Ahead and Know the Schedule
Steamtown National Historic Site will close this Sunday, June 14, for event preparations. June 15-16 are "Public Display Days," offering the closest public viewing opportunities and (we expect) the largest crowds. June 17-30 are "Viewing Days," when visitors can see both Big Boy locomotives while many park operations return to normal.
Before traveling, check
nps.gov/steamtown and
up.com/steamschedule for the latest official event information.
2. Timed Entry Reservations Are Required
Due to the anticipated level of interest and for the safety and security of visitors, volunteers and staff, timed entry reservations are required for all visits between June 15 - 30, regardless of which day you plan to attend. To get your tickets, visit our Big Boy Reunion page or
recreation.gov.
3. Expect Traffic, Parking, and Entrance Changes
Expect large crowds. Visitors should allow extra travel time, review parking options before arriving and follow posted event signage and staff directions.
To assist with crowd management, the Marketplace at Steamtown pedestrian bridge will operate as EXIT ONLY on June 15-16 and on weekends throughout the event period.
Paid parking is available throughout downtown Scranton. Complimentary shuttle service from designated satellite parking locations will be available during the Public Display Days. Visitors should review parking and shuttle information in advance and ought to expect traffic delays.
4. Come Prepared for a Busy Day
Expect lines, crowds, walking and outdoor conditions. Wear comfortable footwear, dress appropriately for the weather, stay hydrated, wear sunscreen and plan accordingly.
5. Make the Most of a Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience
This may be your only opportunity to see Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014 alongside Steamtown's Big Boy No. 4012. Take time to enjoy the experience, explore the site and appreciate this unique moment in railroad history. Explore Visit NEPA and Scranton Tomorrow to find ways to extend your visit so that you can enjoy the area's museums, restaurants, shops, parks and other attractions.
6. Are drones permitted at the Big Boy Reunion?
No drones may be launched, landed or operated from Steamtown National Historic Site. Also, Union Pacific does not permit drones during Display Days and requires drones to remain at least 25 feet laterally from the tracks when Big Boy is in motion. All drone operations must comply with applicable FAA, state, and local requirements.
