Nearly a century later, collective punishment remains a feature of Palestinian life under Israeli rule. Human rights organizations have documented the continued use of policies such as home demolitions, movement restrictions, closures, sieges, and other measures that affect entire communities. The history of Jaffa’s destruction offers an important lens through which to understand the long continuity of colonial practices in Palestine.🧵

In this article for the Journal of Palestine Studies, assistant professor at Birzeit University and the Arab American University in Palestine and researcher in postcolonial and cultural studies, Eman Alasah, examines the strategic deployment of multilingual practices in Anglophone Palestinian autobiographical writing, rendering language a site of anti-colonial resistance and narrative sovereignty. By centering language as a locus of inquiry, Alasah posits Anglophone Palestinian autobiographical writing as a historically ironic yet politically urgent literary intervention that challenges erasure while sustaining narrative sovereignty. "... Indigenous authors inscribe their difference within the English text. In effect, the writer discloses to the Anglophone reader: 'I am using your language so that you will understand my world, but you will also know by the differences in the way I use it that you cannot share my experience.'” Read the full open-access article in the Journal of Palestine Studies: doi.org/10.1080/0377919X.202…

This was followed by the Balfour Declaration, in which Britain expressed support for the establishment of a "national home for the Jewish people" in Palestine. Together, these agreements and promises contradicted Arab expectations of independence and helped lay the foundations for the colonial mandates that emerged after the war, profoundly shaping the future of Palestine and the wider region.🧵

The passing of Leila Shahid in February of this year marked the loss of one of Palestine's most influential spokesperson and diplomat. In this remembrance written for the Journal of Palestine Studies, Ziad Majed (@ziadmajed), professor of Middle Eastern studies and international relations at the American University of Paris, reflects on the life and the legacy left behind throughout the storied career of Shahid.
