Like modern sea turtles, they had oar-like frontal appendages specialized for swimming in the open ocean. What distinguishes them from modern marine turtles is the lack of a solid shell; rather, it had a skeletal framework which supported its leathery carapace.

Archelon is a "Protostegid", a completely extinct, separate lineage of marine reptiles from extant sea turtles that are generally characterized by their depressed turtle body plan, complete with four limbs, a short tail, and a large head at the end of a relatively short neck.

It had an elongated, narrow head with a hooked beak at the end similar to the beaks of parrots. It's beak & jaws combined were likely capable of delivering a powerful bite, perhaps being used to hunt large fish& cephalopods as well as in intraspecific combat.

Now how do we know that "Bunker" is TEX? Well amazingly, "Bunker" has TEX apomorphies, or derived traits that are unique to a particular taxonomic group / species. In fact, alongside "Bunker", over a dozen other specimens share similar apomorphic traits with the holotype! 🔬
