I know you are supposed to love them all equally, but the truth is some you love more equally than others. Such is the case with the first chapter from Bushra Moussaoui’s MS thesis, open access now in Proc Roy Soc B. Here’s why . . . royalsocietypublishing.org/d…

When Bushra examined learning, she found the two age classes did not differ in vocal plasticity nor convergence to others, suggesting older birds are capable of learning. Older birds had less diverse call repertoires, though, perhaps reflecting their sparser social networks.

So although the official title is a mouthful, it can be boiled down to ā€œYou can teach an old bird new calls, but they may not care to learn from youā€. Our local NPR station did a nice synopsis. krwg.org/krwg-news/2023-07-0…

Protein, rather than fat, may limit the flight time of such epic migrators as blackpoll warblers. The tiny birds flew for 28 hours in a wind tunnel—a new record—and only quit when their protein reserves gave out. In PNAS: ow.ly/KEF050NMNZX

Congratulations Greg! Very happy to see our academic (grand)parent [PhD supervisor for Tyler] awarded with this prestigious recognition. We'd suggest his work on "photoperiodism" was the predominant contribution šŸ˜‰. Thanks @JBalthazart and colleagues.
CONGRATULATIONS to Greg Ball, the 2023 SBN Lifetime Achievement Lehrman Award winner. His contributions to behavioral neuroendocrinology though work on the ā€œchallenge hypothesisā€, and the role of androgens & estrogens in song learning have helped shape the field.
