Something that really stands out when you watch both our VFL side and the AFL side, and something that Solly has outlined repeatedly in his first couple of press conferences, is how poor our ball protection has been and how little we seem to value our disposals.
As Solly said:
"We were flicking it out of the contest when we wanted to hold it in. Ball security is really important."
"Basic fundamentals of the game just kill us!"
Other sides look composed. They don't rush, we continually dish it to players in a worse position. Sadly we used to actually train it at training under the previous regime, the ridiculous overuse of handball!
A lot to unravel. But to fix a problem you have to identify what the problem is. Which Solly has!

The club has already stated that it will outline its coaching appointment process around the bye. Because Essendon has done a good job of keeping things in-house, speculation is running wild.
Andrew Welsh isn't going to come out and refute every speculative report written by a journalist.
It's no secret that Welsh and Solly are close friends. However, it's also worth remembering that if Gia hadn't left virtually on the eve of the season, Solly would likely be sitting on the board right now.
The club will run a process. Don't get sucked into the join-the-dots journalism.

Over the past 13 months I have travelled all over Victoria to see players in the 2026 draft pool.
And here's my footage of the guys I rank in the top 10.
With my Essendon hat on I would love to draft Harry Van Hattum. Welsh and Solomon may already have sat down with him. I can see the headline: When Harry Met Solly!
Arki Butler would also be a great pick up. Fast, elusive, creative small who can mark. An Essendon fan and grandson of former Bomber Allan Davis.
