Today marks the centennial anniversary of the Ritual of the Calling of and Engineer. Engineering graduates who partake in the Iron Ring ceremony commit standards and ethical practice above all else.
I am not sure if this is appropriate, but thought I would use AI to generate a re-affirmation of my on-going commitment. I wanted it updated to reflect this new world of AI we are creating in our profession that with appropriate ethical standards and good judgement can lead to abundance and prosperity for all. The alternative is unthinkable.
I, Paul Relf, an engineer bearing the Iron Ring, stand to reaffirm my sacred commitment to the calling of our profession in an era defined by artificial intelligence. With humility, foresight, and steadfast resolve, I renew my pledge to uphold integrity, ethical stewardship, and service to all humanity.
I vow to harness AI as a tool for abundance, creating systems that unlock prosperity, opportunity, and well-being for every individual and community. My work shall advance sustainable solutions, optimize resources, and empower humanity to thrive in harmony with our planet. I will ensure that AI serves the common good, designed with transparency, accountability, and unwavering commitment to safety.
As I carry this Iron Ring, its presence reminds me to wield AI with ethical clarity—to innovate boldly, to guard against harm, and to prioritize the flourishing of all. I pledge to be a custodian of trust, shaping an AI-driven future where technology amplifies human potential and fosters shared prosperity.
In the spirit of those who established this tradition, and for the generations who will inherit this world of boundless possibility, I reaffirm my oath to engineer with conscience, to create with purpose, and to uphold the highest ethical standards. So help me fulfill this enduring trust.
