This is part of the huge amount of work local people have done to understand and celebrrate their local heritage. The Aylesham Centre needs developing yes. But the new development needs to be beautiful. Ideally gentle density and with hopefully some social rather/as well as affordable housing too. This is not to demonise Berkeley Homes in any way but if they sat down with the locals and the Council and did some number crunching together, I think a much better scheme that does not overwhelm Peckham could be designed. A scheme that benefits all the parties involved amd everyone gets excited about.
Berkeley underestimated how much local people care about the place were they live, grew up, work. #Peckham#Heritage

Among all the scandalised media coverage, YIMBY outrage and @BerkeleyGroupUK bosses playing the victim, a reminder that by 2 years ago we had accumulated over 25,000 signatures in campaigns against the overdevelopment of the Aylesham site #Peckham ⬇️
Andy Burnham called for a council house building programme on a scale not seen since after World War II
Ohh this is good. This is very very good 👏🏽

#Peckham is not broken. 🚀
@BerkeleyGroupUK may own the Aylesham site, but the people of Peckham — alongside local voices and elected representatives — will continue to fight for a development that serves local need and respects heritage.

Great news for Peckham, as Berkeley Homes' monstrous plan to build THIS is turned down, with the inspector citing English Heritage's objection that it would be "an enormous wall of development, resulting in harm."
SUCCESS! – local people won the Aylesham case. Inspector dismissed the Berkeley appeal against refusal of planning permission. He cited English Heritage objection that it would be ‘an enormous wall of development, thus resulting in harm’. See more here: peckhamvision.org/wiki/Ayles…
Big Peckham win! 💥
Planning permission refused for this overdevelopment of unaffordable housing scheme demolising Aylesham Centre
Community mobilisation was very strong. Whatever is planned next needs to serve the actual community and not developer profits
The Planning Inspectorate has REFUSED
@BerkeleyGroupUK Aylesham appeal.
Victory for @ACAPeckham people, culture, skyline, businesses, and future. A community and council stood up against one of the UK’s biggest developers — and won. #RightForPeckham#NoPriceOnCulture
