The current generation of players has therefore achieved one of the greatest successes in the history of U.S. college squash. The Howe Cup has been held annually since 1973 (except in 2021 due to the pandemic) and brings together the best university teams in the United States.
The participation of a Croatian player in the team that won the most prestigious U.S. collegiate squash competitionrepresents a historic moment for Croatian squash and confirms the growing international presence of Croatian athletes in the sport.
Vedran Režić, president of the Croatian Squash Federation, added that this is:
“A historic result and the right step for Franka toward the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.”
He emphasized that Vidović has proven she belongs among the world’s best.
Her support team also includes conditioning coach Dražen Prskalo and the Croatian Olympic Committee’s Center of Excellence, with support from the Zagreb Sports Association and the Ministry of Tourism and Sport.
In sport there are no coincidences — this result is the result of Franka’s work and the entire team around her, including her family, parents, coaches, and sports federations.”
Vidović’s longtime coach and Croatian national team coach Vedran Švonja commented:
“Franka is an exceptional talent and has been competing on the domestic, European, and world stage since she was nine years old.
A large part of Penn’s success is also credited to its experienced coaching staff, led by long-time head coach Jack Wyant, one of the most respected coaches in U.S. collegiate squash.
Vidović said after the victory:
“I’m incredibly happy and grateful to have the opportunity to be the captain of this team and to achieve Penn’s greatest result in team collegiate squash together with them.”
This success has special significance for Croatian squash, as the team’s captain and number-two player is Croatian athlete Franka Vidović. She is a junior at this prestigious Ivy League university and one of the key members of the team that won the national title.
The decisive point in the final was won by team vice-captain Jana Dweek, who defeated her Princeton opponent 3–0 in sets, securing the championship for Penn.
