BREAKING: Pope Leo on the SSPX consecrations — “I am considering making another appeal and saying ‘don't do this, let's try to live the communion of the Church.’ But it is their choice. We must realize what it means for them and for the Church. Certainly, the division among Christians is a painful point. However, they refuse to accept some fundamental elements of the Church, starting with several points of the Second Vatican Council. If they make that choice, I am sorry. But we must move forward”

NEW: Pope Leo has written to priests to mark the feast of the Sacred Heart: Dear priests, renew each day your “Here I am” before Christ’s pierced Heart. Give yourselves entirely to him, so that you may love his people with the same love with which he loves them. And joyfully remember how the saintly Curé of Ars loved to say that “the priesthood is the love of the heart of Jesus”

The Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a significant feast, celebrated annually on the Friday following the second Sunday after Pentecost, typically in June. This devotion honors the profound love of Jesus Christ, symbolized by His Sacred Heart, which represents His divine and human compassion for humanity. The feast encapsulates themes of mercy, redemption, and the boundless love of God, inviting believers to reflect on Christ’s sacrifice and to respond with love and devotion. The devotion to the Sacred Heart originated in the Middle Ages but was formalized through the visions of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, a French nun, in the 17th century. Between 1673 and 1675, Jesus appeared to her, revealing His heart as a symbol of His infinite love and asking for a feast to be established in its honor. He emphasized acts of reparation for humanity’s sins and the practice of receiving Holy Communion on the First Fridays of each month. This message resonated deeply, leading to the spread of the devotion across the Church. The Solemnity itself was instituted by Pope Clement XIII in 1765 and extended to the universal Church by Pope Pius IX in 1856. It is marked by special Masses, prayers, and devotions, such as the Litany of the Sacred Heart and the Act of Reparation. The imagery of the Sacred Heart—often depicted with flames, a cross, and thorns—symbolizes Christ’s burning love, His crucifixion, and the suffering He endured for humanity’s salvation. Theologically, the Sacred Heart underscores the reality of the Incarnation: Jesus, fully divine and fully human, loves with a Heart that feels deeply. It calls Catholics to reciprocate this love through prayer, charity, and a life of holiness. In a world often marked by division and indifference, the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart serves as a reminder of Our Lord’s unwavering love and an invitation to reciprocate that love by making reparation for sin, and the practice of charity.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus Surmounted by a Flaming Cross 1. St. Margaret Mary saw the Sacred Heart of Jesus surmounted by flames in the midst of which a Cross was raised on high. These flames and this Cross were the symbol of the infinite love of Jesus. Let us reflect a little. God, immeasurably happy in Himself, wished to communicate a share in His happiness to men, whom He created in a state of earthly happiness. He was offended by men and, when He saw that they were heading for destruction, He sent His Eternal Word to them. The Word took a human nature and became our brother; He preached the way to Heaven and gave us the means to achieve it. More than this, He offered Himself as a divine victim of expiation for ours sins. Having been condemned by those whom He had come to show the way, He died upon the Cross and shed all His blood for our salvation. Pagans of all times have called this “the folly of the cross.” In fact, it is the miracle of the infinite love of God for humanity. Let us remember, however, that, although His love and goodness are infinite, so also is His justice. It is an overwhelming miracle of love on the part of God that He became man and died for us. It will be our own downfall if we fail to co-operate with this miracle of love. The same Jesus Who died on the Cross for us and revealed His Heart, pierced and flaming with love, will one day appear with the same glorious sign of the Cross as our Supreme Judge. Then He will say to the wicked: “Depart from me, accursed ones, into everlasting fire!” God’s justice is as infinite as His charity. We must choose either the way of the Cross, the way of love and goodness to which the Sacred heart of Jesus invites us, or the way of sin, which leads to the gulf of ruin and the final condemnation of the Supreme Judge. This is the tremendous choice we have to make. 2. This flaming Heart surmounted by a Cross represents not only the infinite love of Jesus, the obedient victim of love, but indicates also that if we wish to follow our divine Redeemer as far as Heaven, our true country, we must follow Him along the path of love and of the Cross. There is only one way of perfection, and that is the way of the Cross. Jesus has told us this and has set us an example. “If anyone wishes to come after me,” He said, “let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.” (Luke 9, 23) He gave us an example by allowing Himself, innocent though He was, to be burdened with our sins. He staggered as far as Calvary beneath the weight of the Cross and there He shed His Precious Blood to the last drop. We must take the road of the Cross also. If we do not love our own cross, we do not love the Cross of Jesus. The Saints looked for humiliation and suffering in order to prove their love for Jesus. We must at least accept with resignation those sufferings and humiliations which Providence has allotted to us. We must embrace our cross daily and carry it with faith and love in the footsteps of Jesus. The Cross is the standard of Christ; it is the ladder which leads to Heaven. If anyone does not want to have anything to do with it, he does not want to have anything to do with Jesus. 3. Sweetest Jesus, be not my Judge, but my Saviour. (Antonio Cardinal Bacci)

Pope Leo XIV addressed the Spanish Parliament this morning. Key elements –– 1. He decried abortion & euthanasia: “Can a community that casts into the shadows the unborn child, the elderly, the sick, those who suffer in silence, or those who depend entirely on the care of others be called fully just? The defense of human life is neither a partisan issue nor a confessional interest: it is a goal of civilization.” 2. Noted fundamental import of the family: “Where the family is upheld, the spiritual and social stability of nations is also strengthened.” 3. Urged peace as the only viable future for global continuity: “The world is undergoing a profound spiritual and cultural crisis, which manifests in multiple forms of violence, polarization and mutual distrust. In this context, peace emerges as a political aspiration and, even more so, as a true moral imperative.” 4. Urged freedom but not unrestrained freedom: “From this perspective, the legitimate autonomy of the temporal order must never see itself as hostile to religion. Faith does not seek to impose itself through privileges or coercion; yet neither can it be silenced as if it were irrelevant to public life.” 5. Called for proper response to “tragic drama of migration” including offering “safe and legal pathways” for migration along with protecting “the right to remain in one’s own land, working to ensure that no one has to leave their home due to a lack of peace, security or decent living conditions.” 6. Defended the legal status of the Seal of Confession: “where the believer can open his or her soul to God without fear of external pressures.” 7. Noted Christian roots of modern society: “modern freedom has also been shaped by a long education of conscience, deeply marked by the Christian tradition. In that inner school, people learned that law must serve the good, that justice sets limits on force, that power requires legitimacy, that the poor belong fully to the community, that the foreigner must be welcomed in accordance with his dignity, and that human life can never be treated as a commodity.” @PelicanBriefHQ @PelicanCatholic

The month of June is dedicated to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ. The Solemnity of the Sacred Heart is celebrated this year on June 12. Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus originated from Christ Himself, as His heart was pierced during the crucifixion. The Preface for the Mass of the Sacred Heart proclaims, “He poured out blood and water from His pierced side, the wellspring of the Church’s Sacraments.” With that particular focus on His suffering heart, later saints such as St. Lutgarde, a Cistercian, d. 1246; St. Matilda, a Benedictine, d. 1298; and St. Gertrude, a Benedictine, d. 1302, each contributed to furthering the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. However, it was St. Margaret Mary Alacoque who is principally responsible for spreading our modern-day devotion. Over a period of 18 months, from 1673 to 1675, Our Lord appeared to her and requested that He be honored under the image of His Sacred Heart. How were people to show honor to His heart? First, by consecrating themselves to His heart, followed by acts of reparation, little sacrifices (similar to the request at Fatima), and then a devotion to His human, wounded, Sacred Heart through the practice of the First Friday devotion (receiving Holy Communion, Confession, and spending an hour before the Blessed Sacrament), and praying the Litany of the Sacred Heart. Our Lord made 12 promises to those who fulfill the First Friday devotion. These promises include graces, peace, consolation from troubles, blessings, mercy, growth in faith, and an increase in holiness. Of particular importance is that those “who propagate this devotion shall have their names eternally written in my heart.” In addition, those who receive Communion on the first Fridays, for nine consecutive months will have the grace of final repentance: they will not die without receiving the sacraments. And, the 10th promise is directed toward priests: “I will give to priests the power to touch the most hardened hearts.” So, what about you and your home or apartment? Is there an image of the Sacred Heart prominently displayed? Does the Heart of Christ reign in your family? Will you offer it reverence with a special place, or pray the Litany of the Sacred Heart during the month of June? The novena to the Sacred Heart will begin on June 3. The novena prayer will be posted daily.

The Litany of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a traditional Catholic prayer that invokes the various attributes and mysteries of the Heart of Jesus, seeking His mercy. It is one of the approved litanies of the Church, enriched with a partial indulgence. This litany dates back to the 17th century and was formally approved for public use by Pope Leo XIII in 1899. It consists of 33 invocations to the Sacred Heart, corresponding to the 33 years of Christ’s earthly life. It is often recited during June, the month dedicated to the Sacred Heart, or on the Feast of the Sacred Heart (this year occurring on June 12).
