Those who leave MAGA take accountability for their past, and don't blame others.
Yes, we are all susceptible to being influenced, and I defend no one's ignorance, including my own; I allowed myself to believe lies, falsehoods and conspiracy theories. No one, however, coaxed or coerced me into supporting Trump and the MAGA movement. Taking responsibility is necessary to making amends for past deeds and rhetoric that hurt others.

When I tell people I founded an organization that helps people leave Donald Trumpโs MAGA movement, the response is often a derisive snort.
โWhy waste your time on them?โ people sometimes say. โTheyโre a lost cause."
I firmly believe that kind of dismissive contempt is misguided. In fact, I know it, on a profound personal level. Yes, there are many folks so deep in Trumpโs thrall that they may never see him for what he is. But there are also a great many who may one day leave the bubble. I know because Iโm someone who already did, and Iโve started a community of former MAGA Americans.

We are ten years into allegations of widespread election fraud - only for elections Trump or republicans lose, mind you - for which Trump and allies have either not produced evidence, or claimed evidence which was subsequently debunked. And blatant contradictions - such as celebrating wins under the same laws and practices while confidently declaring theft for any losses - are now the norm.

If someone feels democracy has failed them, they will seek out an alternative. To many (especially our youth), MAGA is that alternative.

I was at an event this past weekend attended mostly by Democrats, liberals and progressives. I was encouraged to hear many of them say that we need to welcome those who leave MAGA; those who leave may not become Democrats, but they will vote Democratic, because the alternative is to vote MAGA. (Leaving MAGA neither endorses, nor works with, candidates, campaigns and/or parties.) Unlikely, but necessary, alliances are how we will get past our current moment of crisis. Some of our leaders are Republican and conservative, but vote Democratic.

When I was in MAGA, I feared a โTheyโ who were abridging my rights and trying to indoctrinate my kids.
I came to understand after leaving MAGA that the coordinated, multi-decade demonization, dehumanization and vilification of Democrats, liberals, etc., fuel a lot of the rage and fear within MAGA. I am not defending anyoneโs ignorance, but the right-wing propaganda and agitprop have long been effective, consistent and disciplined.

63 federal courts threw out all of Trumpโs BS claims.
All of them. The Supreme Court rejected all of Trumpโs BS claims. He now screams and cuts off interviews because he constantly lies about elections being rigged. Heโs projecting again.
