Tonight - early evening, look east for the rising 'supermoon'...BUT WAIT, there's more! Almost touching at its right, is Saturn! It's a rare sight to see them so near each other in this conjunction. But it's an illusion - the moon is 356,000 km from us, Saturn is 1.2 billion!

Last night here was strong auroral activity, however most of southern Victoria was rained out. It's worth having a try again tonight as activity may continue. For more details on when, where and how see my FB page 'Perry Vlahos Astronomy'. (Painting F Church 1865)

The Chinese Space Station - Tiangong, makes a 'bullseye' pass over Melbourne tonight, seen easily with naked eye. Gather family, friends and look for it at 9:42 PM low in the WNW sky. It will slowly climb overhead & challenge Jupiter's brightness. Good luck/clear skies.

GEMINID METEORS TO PUT ON SHOW! It'll be active overnight, and also even better tomorrow night. Predictions are for about 30 meteors per hour Friday morning around 3 AM from the country. In the city, halve that number. Look NE, chart shows the northern sky at approx 2:30 AM.

It looks clear tonight, let's not waste it - find the oldest thing you will ever easily see with your naked eye from Melbourne - the star Arcturus, about 7.5 billion years old. Between 6 - 6:30 PM over the next week it's 30° above the horizon, halfway between N & NW.

Intense auroral display occurred this morning if you were up prior to dawn. It was brief but very energetic and seen all over rural Victoria. This pic is from ASV's dark sky site in central Victoria, taken by Eddie Pang!

Couldn't get to Exmouth for eclipse today, thought I'd share it with passersby outside my house in Melbourne. Got inundated by the curious, managed a quick low quality pic with phone at eyepiece.

I'm 'Astronomer in Residence' at Meredith Golden Plains Festival this weekend, showing punters the Universe during the night and sun during the day. Combines my two loves - music & astronomy. If you're there come up to Sunset Strip, say hello & have a look through the telescopes.

It's 20 years since the devastating fire that ripped through Mt Stromlo Observatory. Sadly it destroyed the Observatory, but no lives were lost. Like a Phoenix from the ashes... youtube.com/watch?v=Kyu1OlSb…

Vale Bob Evans. Sad news of the passing of the most prolific supernova hunter earth known - 47 discoveries and all not far from his home in NSW. Glad to know him personally & huge loss to astronomy. An honor to stand beside him at Linden Obs in Blue Mountains when visiting him.
