Brilliant to have Dr. Alex Loktionov (OP) back to deliver a socially-distanced 42 on Apocalypticism in Graeco-Roman Egypt! Fascinating research, thankyou for coming, Alex!

One of the oldest pieces we have written by a woman is this Greek papyrus from about 1800 years ago. Aurelia Thaissous writes to the prefect of Egypt to apply for legal independence, so she can act, sell and buy things without a male guardian 1/2 #NationalWritingDay

Our Year 3s continue to use so many skills to create Medusa masks. This one in particular has been very successful at turning a couple of brothers to stone!

A favourite Classical site from Mr Green to finish the week Priene, in modern day Turkey An ancient Greek city in Ionia, succinctly described in Mr Green's words: "Amazingly preserved, absolutely deserted."

A favourite Classics-related quote today from Miss Ruffle bella gerant alii; tu, felix Austria, nube! - Let others wage wars; you, happy Austria, marry! A hexameter referring to the way the Habsburg dynasty extended their dominions by marriage rather than conquest

Coffee, computers and Classics: the lockdown hasn't stopped the department's series of extension seminars for the Sixth Form. Plato's Apology was the topic of the day. A favourite Classical text for Mr Bennett

A favourite Classical person from Miss D'Asaro Virgil (70-19 BC) Author of the most famous Roman epic, the Aeneid, Virgil had an incredible insight into the human psyche and a most compassionate eye for human sufferings. No wonder that Dante picked him as his guide through Hell.

To start the Classics' department's "Classical favourites", a favourite quote of Mr Foster's: si hortum in bibliotheca habes, deerit nihil. (Cicero) If you have a garden in your library, nothing is missing! Sounds like an excellent set up for lockdown!
