Painting at Bedtime. The Victorian Chair. Childe Hassam. Hassam was one of the earliest and best regarded of the group of painters dubbed 'American Impressionists'. He does not seem to have been very influenced by French Impressionism despite studying in Paris.

Painting at Bedtime. The Long Engagement. Arthur Hughes. This painting illustrates a real problem in Victorian England. The man is a poor curate who is paid so little that he cannot afford to marry unless he is promoted. The family of the lady will cut her off without a penny.

Painting at Bedtime. La Schiavona. Titian. I was always struck by this painting in the National Gallery in London, of an unknown woman, a 'Woman of Dalmatia'. Painted by Titian in his youth, in about 1510, he dress is slightly duller because Titian overpainted it later.

Painting at Bedtime. Giovanna Baccelli. Thomas Gainsborough. The sitter was Principal Ballerina at the Kings Theatre. She was a very accomplished dancer, but this was overshadowed by her well known status as mistress to the Duke of Dorset, so the painting was not well received.

Painting at Bedtime. Girl with Cherries. Eva Gonzalez. Gonzalez was a pupil, said to be the only official pupil, of Manet. I remember not being able to find many of her paintings, but I have come across many more lately. She died much too young, only a few days after Manet.

Painting at Bedtime. The Governess. Emily Mary Osborn. In the 18th and early 19th century one of the very few jobs open to educated but penniless young women was that of a Governess. It was often a lonely and difficult job, even with just one child and reasonable employers.
