ALT Heading: Peterloo in Rock, with a logo showing a heart pierced by a sabre, encircled by the words "Reformers of Peterloo".
Polyp's drawing shows the Blanketeers, a group of protesters carrying blankets for their journey, who tried to march to London to present their grievances to the government. They are seen from behind, walking up the road, with blankets and bags tied on their backs, and one of them wearing a red Liberty cap; but soldiers on horseback, with sabres drawn, are riding towards them.

Just time to wish a happy 238th birthday to Samuel Bamford, weaver, writer, poet and Radical, who led the Middleton contingent to Peterloo in August 1819.
ALT Polyp's drawing of Samuel Bamford as a young man, in front of the clock tower of the church in Middleton.
In early April 1820, what could have been a significant uprising occurred in the West Riding of Yorkshire, It was closely linked to unrest in the west of Scotland, particularly around Glasgow and the aftermath of the "Peterloo" trials. The unrest unfolded in several towns. 1/3

Today in 1819, working people in Manchester gathered peacefully to demand the right to vote. The authorities sent the troops in & 18 people were killed. This event reminds us that every right we have was fought for.
In Manchester today commemorating the Peterloo massacre.
I was at the commemoration today at the Peterloo Memorial in Manchester; proud to have read out a name of one of the victims - Thomas Ashton, a special constable killed by so-called 'friendly fire' - cut down by a fellow constable's sabre then trampled to death.
Wonderful local banner made in commemoration of Peterloo massacre and those who gave their all. Carried as we walked the same path as those folk 200 years later in 2019.
A stunning tapestry hung in the arches today for the #Peterloo Musical, marking the anniversary of the massacre, right on the spot where it unfolded.
Tickets left for 8pm…💙💜

PETERLOO COMMEMORATION 2025
Saturday 16 August, 1pm
We'll meet at the Peterloo Memorial in front of Manchester Central for the reading of the names of those who died in 1819.
Bring flowers if you can, especially your own!
There are two other Peterloo events on 16 August
(1/2)
ALT Wreaths and bunches of flowers lying on the bottom two levels of the Peterloo memorial, above the inscription telling the story of the Peterloo massacre and why we should remember it.
Afterwards at @53two we saw Reformers of Peterloo perform Peterloo in Rock, a musical show about 1819 and the fight for democracy (have we won yet?) Featuring the art of @PeterlooMemoria's Polyp as ever-shifting backdrop.
One more performance tonight 8pm!

Also very good to see the Peterloo tapestry, created by members of the public in the run-up to the bicentenary in 2019, on display in the bar of @53two!
