How do you find the motivation to finish your project? And how do you stay motivated throughout the whole process?
These questions go nowhere.
I think a lot of people abandon their projects because they've "lost motivation". They think that, in order to finish something, you need to feel motivated all the time, and if you don't… well, onto the next thing.
And that's very far from reality.
Sure, brain chemistry helps. Focus helps. Some people have this almost obsessive URGE to see their project finished, and that helps too.
But even with that, and I'm definitely the kind of person who can lock himself in for hours and hours if needed, I can't remember a single semi serious project where I was motivated from start to finish. Like some cotton candy cloud fantasy where I wake up every day excited to spend 10h working on something.
No. F*ck no.
I'd say I spend around 70% of any project in a state where I basically hate it. I'm not convinced by it. It's not good enough. It's painfully hard to get the wheel moving, and my brain keeps trying to trick me with any excuse to go do literally anything else.
It's impossible to stay motivated all the time.
In the end, at least for me, it's much more about SACRIFICE.
Patience is key. Time is key. Even if you don't see results at first, simply putting time into a project means you're getting somewhere, even if it doesn’t feel like it. And hopefully, sooner or later, it pays off through the knowledge you've accumulated.
Oh, and of course, only process the feedback that's actually useful. Mentally filter out any malicious or destructive comments people make about your work.
Make things that you would want to use, see, or enjoy yourself.
Everything else is noise.
