Very interesting discussion. Is 'empathy' a buzzword, and is 'sympathy' out of favour? Though they mean different things, perhaps it's more of a cultural shift. Perhaps we're now acknowledging the feelings we share with people, rather than feeling a more distant pity?

Has empathy/empathetic completely replaced sympathy/sympathetic in usage? I can't remember the last time I heard anyone use sympathetic.
