A Gregg Popovich story, with the Spurs playing Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals at OKC on Saturday night: I was new on the Spurs beat in 1999-2000 when my uncle passed away in Austin. I was assigned to cover a Spurs practice and write a story the day of his funeral -- and because I was so new on the beat I opted to miss the funeral. Popovich got word of this through the Spurs' inimitable Tom James, and Popovich pulled me aside before practice and gave me everything I needed for that day (even though interviews were scheduled to take place after practice). On my way out Popovich put his arm around me and said let him know if there was anything else he could do for my family. I headed from San Antonio to Austin and made the funeral, and wrote the story late that afternoon from Austin. Some things you always remember.
