Absolute history in Atlanta. Cape Verde a tiny island nation of just 600k people making their literal World Cup debut has just held the reigning European Champions Spain to a 0-0 draw.
Spain started Rodri, Pedri, Gavi and subbed on Lamine Yamal. They were completely locked down by a side ranked 67th in the world, anchored by a 40-year-old goalkeeper playing in the Portuguese second tier.
This is why population metrics and paper valuations mean absolutely nothing in football. Structured football ecosystems and tactical discipline will always destroy raw reputation. What a sport.

This might be one of the worst sports comparisons I have seen.
Football’s global reach is measured by participation, viewership and fanbase, not by adding the populations of countries that qualified.
A statistic can be technically correct and still be intellectually useless.
Football fans: "Football is the world’s biggest sport."
