EXTENDED HOURS!
We are extending operation hours on the Allegheny River for the Fourth of July fireworks at Locks 2 & 3.
We will remain open until 2 a.m. the evening of July 4 for fireworks night.
We will return to normal hours of 6 a.m. to midnight beginning July 5.
Listen folks, when your life revolves around dams and life jackets, these are the jokes.
Can you come up with some better #DadJoke that won’t have #CaptainAmerica beat up?
In the meantime, we should mention that dams are no laughing matter.
If it weren’t for those reservoirs, we would have a lot more flash floods in the region. Downstream communities and the Point of Pittsburgh would flood more frequently. The parkway would shut down regularly.
For those about to lock—we salute you. All hail to the good times, ‘cause rock has got the right of way. But if you’re in a recreational boat, so do military craft, mail boats and commercial craft. Want to learn more about locking through our facilities? rb.gy/qkgifp
And yes, our rockers should be wearing personal floatation devices here. Once we let them know, they broke out into song:
P.F.D.! on my power boat... P.F.D.! watch me flooooaaat!!! Oi! Oi! Oi!
“So you work for the Army Corps of Engineers—are you part of the Army?” Yes, we are part of the @USArmy, though most of us are civilian federal employees. Granted, there are many armies. What if we were super fans of the glam rock band @KISS and in #KISSARMY?
Intrigued by this thought, we once again turned to artificial intelligence, generating an image borrowing from famous Kiss lyrics and our very own USACE vision statement.
#MapMonday Behold, a subway map view of the #PittsburghDistrict. The black and white dots are locks and dams. The blue squares are flood risk management reservoirs. Finally, the district is colored by major watershed.
Unfortunately, you can’t ACTUALLY hit all these stops by subway, but you CAN certainly lock through our lock facilities using any watercraft of your choice. You can visit us on anything as small as a kayak or as large as a private yacht. Come on by, and we will lock you!

#ValentinesDay is coming up and we’re listening to love songs like the 1983 classic @_KennyRogers and @DollyParton duet “Islands in the Stream.” Did you know that the @BeeGees wrote it? Well, if we had written it, it’d would have featured Neville & Davis, two Ohio River islands.
Neville Island, just downstream, is home to Pittsburgh Engineer Warehouse and Repair Station (PEWARS) and several other offices and labs essential to the operation of our district. We rely on each other, ah ha. From one office to another, ah ha.
Emsworth Locks and Dams, Davis Island Lock and Dam’s replacement, straddles either side of Neville Island. The larger dam and its lock chambers are on the main channel of the river. There is also a smaller dam on the back channel of the river, on the other side of the island.
#ValentinesDay is coming up and it’s about time we report we’ve seen an alarming increase in #meetcute incidents occurring at our locks. Last summer we saw this man spill coffee on a woman at Montgomery Locks and Dam while we were trying to give a tour.
By the time the man was able to make it to the bench to retrieve his hat, the woman had left. His dog, very determined to help the humans meet, pulled him over to her, where they got tangled up in the dog leashes and fell into the reservoir! Thankfully, they were ok, and laughed!
