BTS Thursdays! Magmadillo was our first boss that walked around in 8 directions, and with that comes a lot of animation, though by keeping the head in a separate layer, it allowed him to breathe fire in multiple directions. This boss' most unique attack is turning into a ball and ping-ponging around the arena. He's programmed to target a player, roll straight to the arena's edge and then bounce back towards another player. We considered other rolling movements, like in a spiral or a star-shape but preferred he directly target players. You can fight him yourself right now on bitmates.io ! BTS Thursdays! Designing bosses in Bitmates takes a lot of planning and no boss shows it better than Anubis: A floating head with independently moving eyes, ears, mouth, hands, 8 vastly different attacks. An arena that you also have to fight, and the lead up to the boss, progressing through the pyramid. On top of all that, putting the pieces together efficiently. For context: Anubis's art with all his attacks/parts is less than 1 MB in file size! Anubis is still a work in-progress in-game but our artists create mockups of the animations so that the developers have a frame of reference. We considered having him in isometric, with the hands coming out of portals, as a reanimated statue, but letting him be free moving was definitely the coolest looking.
