NATURA 2000 DAY - MAY 21 🌿 Natura 2000 Day is dedicated to the ecological network of protected areas that are important for the conservation of endangered species and habitat types within the European Union.
The aim of this celebration is to promote and raise awareness of the value of sites within the network. The ecological network of the Republic of Croatia is among the largest in the European Union. It includes 822 sites – 40 Special Protection Areas (SPAs) and 782 Sites of Community Importance (SCIs) for the conservation of target species and habitat types. Plitvice Lakes National Park, as part of the World Heritage List, is a particularly important area within the Natura 2000 network. The park is significant for the conservation of 20 habitat types, 28 plant and animal species, and 21 bird species listed under the Natura 2000 network.

One of the interesting features of Plitvice Lakes National Park are the electric boats used to transport visitors across Lake Kozjak. Until 1977, visitors crossed the lake in rowing boats operated by sailors, with a capacity of up to 12 passengers.
That same year, electric boats were introduced on Lake Kozjak. After the arrival of two smaller electric boats with a capacity of 50 passengers, the large electric boat “Medo”, designed to carry 100 passengers, joined the fleet in 1978. Today, the electric boat ride on the longer route across Lake Kozjak takes around 20 minutes. Electric boats operate throughout the year, except in periods when the lake freezes over, as happened in 2019.
