BREAKING: LG Autonomy Yielding Tangible Results Across Akwa Ibom — ALGON
UYO, Nigeria: The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Akwa Ibom State chapter, says local government autonomy is already delivering visible developmental results across several communities in the state.
Speaking after an inspection tour of projects executed by local government chairmen, the Chairman of Uyo Local Government Area and Akwa Ibom ALGON Chairman, Uwemedimo Udo, stated that increased financial and administrative independence has significantly improved grassroots governance and service delivery.
The assessment tour was conducted by the Grassroot Accountability and Empowerment Programmes in Nigeria (GAEPN), led by Eze Okonkwo, across several local government areas including Oron, Etim Ekpo, Etinan, Nsit Ibom, Ikot Ekpene, Uruan, and Uyo.
According to Udo, local government autonomy has helped councils respond more effectively to community needs while eliminating bureaucratic delays that previously slowed development projects.
“Local government autonomy has fostered grassroots development by granting councils financial and administrative independence to address unique community needs,” he said.
He noted that councils across the state have invested heavily in rural roads, electrification projects, healthcare centres, school renovations, agriculture, youth empowerment, and water infrastructure.
In Uyo Local Government Area alone, the council reportedly electrified about 10 communities under the “Project Light Up Uyo” initiative, constructed a modern primary healthcare centre, renovated public facilities, and distributed business grants and bursaries to residents.
Udo disclosed that over ₦100 million had been distributed to entrepreneurs through empowerment programmes, while more than ₦11 million was allocated for student bursaries.
The GAEPN delegation commended the council chairmen for what it described as prudent management of local government funds and visible grassroots impact.
Eze Okonkwo, leader of the delegation, said the projects inspected reflected people-oriented governance and aligned with the Akwa Ibom State Government’s ARISE Agenda.
Across the various local government areas visited, the delegation inspected newly constructed administrative buildings, road projects, market renovations, electrification schemes, agricultural demonstration farms, police posts, drainage systems, health centres, and extensive rural road grading projects.
The delegation also praised councils for prioritising youth and women empowerment, educational support, healthcare interventions, and security initiatives aimed at improving living standards within rural communities.
GAEPN further encouraged local government chairmen to sustain transparency, accountability, and citizen-focused governance while pledging to continue similar inspection tours across other councils in the state.
