On This Day — June 12, 2014 Three Jewish teenagers — Naftali Fraenkel (16), Gilad Shaer (16), and Eyal Yifrah (19) — were kidnapped by Hamas terrorists while hitchhiking home from school. They were executed at point-blank range inside the car almost immediately. These were ordinary boys with bright futures. Naftali was a talented student who loved music. Gilad was known for his warmth and quick smile. Eyal was the responsible one, always looking out for others. They were simply trying to get home for Shabbat. For 18 agonizing days, the entire nation of Israel held its breath. Prayers rose from every corner of the country. Jewish mothers stood together pleading for their sons’ return while the world watched. On June 30, their bodies were found. They had been murdered almost immediately after being taken. Hamas terrorists carried out the attack. Many in their ranks celebrated. This is what they call “resistance”: the deliberate kidnapping and slaughter of Jewish teenagers for the sole crime of being Jewish and living in Israel. The abduction shocked Israel to its core, triggered Operation Brother’s Keeper, and became one of the catalysts for the 2014 Gaza war. It served as a brutal reminder that Hamas’s hatred has no bottom — they will murder children without hesitation. May the memories of Naftali, Gilad, and Eyal be a blessing.

We now know from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Israel that The New York Times was made aware weeks before publishing Nicholas Kristof’s explosive op-ed that the independent commission, an NGO, was investigating and going to report on Hamas’ systemic use of sexual violence against Israeli women, girls, and men. Remember, initially, we all thought it was just women and girls, and that was horrible enough. We now know Hamas at gunpoint forced men to have sexual relations with family members in their homes, something we really haven’t seen in the world much since Rwanda. Horrible stuff. And The New York Times, according to Israel and the NGO, was made aware that this report was going come out May 12th. The NGO, independent from the government of Israel, asked for permission to run an article detailing its findings in The New York Times. The New York Times responded that they were not interested in running an article on Hamas’ use of sexual violence against Israelis. And then the day before—not a week before, not a month before, not a week after—the day before, on May 11th, The New York Times runs this explosive Kristof piece. Remember, The New York Times had said it was not interested in this subject. Then, the day before the NGO released its report, the paper ran an explosive piece that blamed the victims. Now, the Israelis are the perpetrators of mass systemic sexual violence against Palestinians. It flips everything on its head.

On This Day — June 5, 2004 While the world debated “resistance” and a “peace process” that Yasser Arafat had already rejected, Palestinian terror groups were systematically turning children into walking bombs. On this day, IDF forces discovered and safely detonated two explosive belts hidden inside schoolbags. This was not some one-time fluke — it was policy. Just weeks later: - July 3: 16-year-old Muataz Takhsin Karini was stopped with a 12 kg explosive belt. - July 14: 17-year-old Ahmed Bushkar from Nablus was arrested before he could detonate. Earlier that year, an 11-year-old boy was caught at a Nablus checkpoint carrying a bag packed with explosives, and a 14-year-old was stopped wearing a suicide vest loaded with nails and ball bearings designed to maximize civilian casualties. They didn’t send these children against soldiers on the battlefield. They sent them — brainwashed, strapped with death, and promised paradise — to blow up Jews at bus stops, cafés, markets, and checkpoints. This is what “resistance” truly looked like: hiding murder in a child’s backpack. An ideology that glorifies turning its own children into suicide bombers has already lost its soul — and any claim to moral legitimacy.

Most criticism of Israel can be summarized as: "Stop defending yourself! Can't you see it's hurting the people trying to kill you!"

This is inversion so callous it's hard to believe. The Holocaust had a survival rate of about 30%. Millions of people disappeared from European cities and towns over several years. Everybody knew because it was happening all around them. Gaza has a survival rate, despite the worst and most deadly and horrible periods of the war, of 97%. All the dead Jews were noncombatants. A large percentage of the dead Gazans were combatants. And the Jews of Europe, even as their millennia-old civilization was being systematically wiped out, wanted nothing from the societies that surrounded them except to be allowed to live in peace. Gaza's leadership of religious fanatics, meanwhile, wants every last Israeli dead and gone, is willing to fight to the last Gazan to achieve that aim, has said so publicly and worked for decades to blow up every peace attempt -- and even now believes that Gaza's destruction would be a worthwhile sacrifice to lay on the altar of Israel's destruction, because their god told them so. So Israelis can reasonably believe, given those features of the Gaza war that aren't true about any genocide ever, and were pretty much the opposite of what was happening in the Holocaust, that Gaza's suffering is a bad and painful war, but not remotely a genocide. But the point of it all, of course, is not to analyze Gaza, but specifically to lump it together with the Holocaust -- to cast the Jews as the new Nazis. The only reason this person would dare to make such an insanely ahistorical and immoral parallel is because this is the heart of the bigoted propaganda campaign in which he enthusiastically participates: The point of it all is to make the Jews into the Nazis. A culture that obsessed about Jews being evil and was then shocked by the Holocaust into obsessing about dead Jews as the apotheosis of righteous victimhood is now obsessively engaged in knocking Jews off that moral pedestal they themselves put them on. That's why they don't care one whit about Hamas massacres of Gazans, about genocidal wars in Syria or Yemen (even when they've funded and armed the sides), about flotilla activists currently held by the Libyans...literally nothing triggers a response except Jews. They still, even after all these generations, no matter what else is happening in the world or in their own societies, can't stop thinking about Jews. And as we Jews learned in the 1940s -- the actual, historical 1940s, not the weird fantasies conjured up by these bigots -- a whole society can be in the grip of a callous, destructive bigotry and still believe it is true and righteous.
