Our book isn't straightforwardly about "war and peace", but about the regime and identity divergence between Ru and Ukraine, which Ru refuses to accept. We'll take the "hot new releases" label, though! Thanks, Amazon. @OxanaShevel @politybooks

« One tanker, who cares » some say. But the value is not economic but psychological— it signals to russia that as it loses its grip, the UK won’t be providing an off-ramp for Pu but is backing Ukraine even more. It neutralizes the hope Ru got from the recent negotiations talk.
🚨 BREAKING: The UK has intercepted and boarded a Russian oil tanker in the English Channel for the first time

This is how Ukraine can make the Russians feel their war. It is so good that the US is out of the war so that it can no longer hinder the Ukrainians from doing the right thing. EU money & Ukrainian arms plus US absence make it possible for Ukraine to win the war.
❗️Fuel restrictions have been introduced in 🇷🇺Moscow, 🇷🇺St. Petersburg, and 🇷🇺Kazan: you can only fill up with 20 liters at a time.

EU (and NATO) enlargement has been the West’s most successful strategic tool of the past three decades. It transformed history and made Europe safer. Without the enlargement that began in the 1990s, Central and Eastern Europe would likely have been consumed by instability and conflict. Grey zones do not remain grey for long. The prospect of membership helped fill them with democracy, prosperity, and the rule of law instead. In doing so, enlargement strengthened not only those who joined, but Europe as a whole. The success of the “new” members became the success of the “old” ones too. That is why Ukraine, Moldova, and the Western Balkans matter. They offer a chance to continue one of Europe’s greatest success stories. Enlargement must remain merit-based—but it must also move fast enough to sustain hope and momentum. Leave countries in the waiting room for too long, and you risk creating the very grey zones enlargement was meant to eliminate.

Russia vs Ukraine is one of the least morally complicated wars ever. Anyone that disputes this is very likely a deranged moron.

O'BRIEN: Trump believed Ukraine had no cards, that he could bully Ukrainians into giving Putin very good deal. He didn't understand that Ukraine was developing their own capabilities and their willingness to fight. So, Trump failed for two reasons. First, Ukrainians adapted, and that wasn't expected by him. You can see there have been some changes in his rhetoric lately, where he has to grudgingly admit that Ukraine has actually done better. The United States completely underestimated Ukrainian resilience. Secondly, Trump thought Europeans would bully Ukraine along with him because they would be afraid of United States leaving NATO. He thought he could use NATO to push Europeans to force Ukraine to take a bad deal. Europeans eventually helped Ukraine more than he thought. They seem to understand that it's actually better for them to have Ukraine fight the war the way Ukraine wants. Trump didn't understand what Ukraine was capable of and he misjudged what Europeans would do.

Goodness. Russia didn’t invade Ukraine because of NATO, because of biolabs, because of n@zis, because family values. Why is it so hard to process this is simply a colonialist imperialist war of conquest, war for control and domination of a sovereign free nation.

Of the various Russian narratives, the one about Ukrainian biolabs has to be among the dumbest. Sure, it probably resonated more in the immediate aftermath of the Covid era, when societies had become paranoid about health-related topics, but, boy, has it aged poorly. And if you're a Russian agent tasked with spreading this particular narrative, you have to wonder whether they have an ounce of respect for you, because they're essentially putting you through a humiliation ritual.
