What exactly is this curious little pig? 🐷
Part 1 of 3
This Roman pig rattle dates to the 1st to 2nd century AD and may have been more than a toy. Objects like this were thought to help protect children from misfortune and the evil eye.

Why is Bes a big deal? 👀
Unlike many ancient gods, he feels… approachable.
A fierce protector of homes, women, children & daily life.
I strongly suspect he’d support your kitchen dancing & shower singing 😅
That makes him special.

We love a “Guess What It Is?”
From absurd guesses to eerily accurate ones, you never disappoint.
Here is another one… What do you think it is? 👀

I suspect if you walked into most pottery studios, you’d find tools being used for things they were never designed for. Ours includes potato mashers, bone corset stays, crochet hooks and a bone tongue depressor 😅

Mithraism was secretive, symbolic, exclusive… & usually centred around intimate cave shrines. I wonder if Roman Mithras worshippers would have had a Discord channel. I suspect yes 😅See the centrepiece of Mithraic worship, the Tauroctony: potted-history.co.uk/product…
A new project today, making 13 Roman amphorae I'm starting with a London 555 Amphora, a long slender pot that will be almost 1 metre tall when finished. As with most Amphora we start in the middle, 🎼🎵🎶 it's a very good place to start 🎵🎶🤣 Watch for developments #Archaeology
I can’t believe I did this 😳
We launched our Janus Bust to our mailing list… then I forgot to tell everyone else.
I’m a potter. The businesswoman part is still under construction 😅

What do you think this is? 🏺
Not an object that would have been familiar in Britain until modern times.
Strange to us… but it had a clear purpose.
Any guesses before the reveal?

Hand building a Bronze Age beaker 🏺
Today Sarah noticed her heart rate drop to 63 bpm while decorating. Quiet focus. Slow, deliberate marks.
No wheel. Just clay and concentration.
A new design is coming soon. Other beakers are available now:

Hands up… who has tried a puzzle jug? 🏺
Simple at first glance… until you try to drink from it.
Descended from the fuddling cup, these clever vessels have been amusing (and confusing) people since the Medieval period.
Try one yourself:

Sherds are where archaeology really begins 🏺
We had a brilliant afternoon with Alison Sheridan and Roger Miket, two people we greatly respect, talking all things sherds.
Fragments teach you to read the past in a whole new way.

Recreating the Boyne Valley, one stroke at a time 🏺
This Grooved Ware bowl is inspired by Neolithic sherds found in the Boyne Valley, where fragments suggest ritual deposition as offerings.
No complete pots survive. Only clues. Explore the collection: potted-history.co.uk
What do you think these little pigs were used for? 🐖
Adorable… but definitely not just decorative.
They had a purpose, and we’ll be adding them to the shop soon.
