It was a funny story, but Helen shushed him, saying, “Maybe Clare doesn’t want to be reminded.” Reminded of what, I wondered. Rich? Did she really think I had forgotten him? I wanted to ask those questions out loud, but that would be rude. People might think I was angry, and I wasn’t. I was bewildered, unsettled, not sure how to be Clare again.
