Precious Life Condemns Sinn Féin Move to Scrap Three-Day Abortion Reflection Period "This is not about compassion – it is about fast-tracking abortion." Precious Life has condemned Sinn Féin's proposed legislation to abolish Ireland's mandatory three-day reflection period for abortion, describing the move as an attack on women, unborn children and an important safeguard in the law. Responding to the announcement, Precious Life Director Bernadette Smyth said: "The three-day reflection period exists for a reason. Women facing an unexpected pregnancy deserve time, space and support before making an irreversible decision. Sinn Féin now wants to remove that protection." Ms Smyth rejected claims that the waiting period is a barrier to healthcare. "Pregnancy is not an illness or a disease. Women need practical support and genuine choices, not a system that rushes them towards abortion." She said thousands of women have benefited from having time to reflect. "The reality is that many women who initially sought an abortion chose instead to continue their pregnancies after taking time to consider their decision and seek support. We believe that more than 10,000 women continued with their pregnancies because they were given that opportunity." Ms Smyth said the proposal is focused on speed rather than support. "This Bill is all about pressure and fast-tracking abortion. If the reflection period made no difference, abortion advocates would not be so determined to remove it." Calling on TDs to oppose the legislation, she added: "This legislation is anti-women, anti-baby and anti-life. Instead of removing safeguards, the Government should be providing better support for women with unexpected pregnancies through practical assistance, counselling, housing and financial support.
