"Top-quintile outcome" is a wild way to decide who makes the playoff. It'd be wild even in the much more permissive pro leagues. A top-quintile outcome for the Browns over the last 30 years is going 8-9. That doesn't mean we design the playoff to make sure 8-9 gets you in.
For a lot of programs, 9-3 or 8-4 is not mediocrity. It is a top-quintile outcome. It is a season fans remember. It is a season that gets a coach an extension, wakes up donors, helps recruiting, and makes people believe the program is moving. In the old bowl ecosystem, those seasons had somewhere to go. The Citrus Bowl, Gator Bowl, Holiday Bowl, Alamo Bowl, Sun Bowl, Liberty Bowl, Outback Bowl, Peach Bowl, Music City Bowl, Las Vegas Bowl, Pinstripe Bowl, and a bunch of others could mean different things to different programs. They were not all equal, and they were not all national-title-adjacent. But they gave teams a postseason reward that fit the scale of what that program had accomplished. That is what the playoff era damaged. The sport did not merely create a better championship mechanism. It centralized almost all postseason meaning into one event. ESPN, as the CFP’s exclusive rights holder, helped build and promote that hierarchy. ESPN and the CFP extended their exclusive relationship through the 2031-32 season, including rights to the playoff games, selection show, weekly rankings shows, and related programming. That is not just broadcasting the sport. That is defining the sport’s value system. So when people say, “Why is Team 19 making the playoff better than Team 19 going to the Citrus Bowl?” the answer is: because there was a time when the Citrus Bowl carried real status. So did a lot of other bowls, depending on the program. But the sport spent a decade telling everyone that anything outside the CFP is meaningless. The meaning moved. And once the meaning moves, the access point has to move with it.

this is like if the best oracle in the land prophesied you would become king but as part of a triumvirate with your two most hated enemies
Steve Palazzolo's model has really good early indicators for Texas Tech (with or without Sorsby), Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State. Last year, No. 1 and No. 2 in his preseason model? Indiana and Miami.

In a 24-team playoff, both these teams are comfortably in, with a bye. This game means nothing. In 2013, it’s widely regarded as one of the most dramatic football games of all time.

Researchers sent the same resume to an AI hiring tool twice. Same qualifications. Same experience. Same skills. One version was written by a real human. The other was rewritten by ChatGPT. The AI picked the ChatGPT version 97.6% of the time. A team from the University of Maryland, the National University of Singapore, and Ohio State just published the receipt. They took 2,245 real human-written resumes pulled from a professional resume site from before ChatGPT existed, so the human writing was actually human. Then they had seven of the most-used AI models in the world rewrite each one. GPT-4o. GPT-4o-mini. GPT-4-turbo. LLaMA 3.3-70B. Qwen 2.5-72B. DeepSeek-V3. Mistral-7B. Then they asked each AI to pick the better resume. Every model picked itself. GPT-4o hit 97.6%. LLaMA-3.3-70B hit 96.3%. Qwen-2.5-72B hit 95.9%. DeepSeek-V3 hit 95.5%. The real human almost never won. Then the researchers tried the obvious objection. Maybe the AI is just better at writing. So they had real humans grade the resumes for actual quality and ran the experiment again, controlling for it. The result was worse. Each AI kept picking itself even when human judges rated the human-written version as clearer, more coherent, and more effective. It gets worse. The AIs do not just prefer AI over humans. They prefer themselves over other AIs. DeepSeek-V3 picked its own resumes 69% more often than LLaMA's. GPT-4o picked its own 45% more often than LLaMA's. Each model can recognize and reward its own dialect. Then the researchers ran the simulation that ends careers. Same job. 24 occupations. Same qualifications. The only variable was whether the candidate used the same AI as the screening tool. Candidates using that AI were 23% to 60% more likely to be shortlisted. Worst gap was in sales, accounting, and finance. 99% of large companies now run AI on incoming resumes. Most of them use GPT-4o. The paper just proved GPT-4o picks GPT-4o 97.6% of the time. If you wrote your own cover letter this week, you did not lose to a better candidate. You lost to a worse candidate who paid OpenAI 20 dollars. Your qualifications do not matter if the AI prefers its own handwriting over yours.

Using facial recognition tech, the Knicks surveilled a trans woman, tracking her every move out of fear she'd show up on MSG's tv broadcast And they can do it to any "enemy" of Jim Dolan, who's built his own deep state. From @NoahShachtman & me @WIRED wired.com/story/madison-squa…

Why has Texas A&M moved up five spots in the last ten days without playing a game?

Colorado Mesa, which is 33-1 and ranked #4 in the coaches poll, is not one of the eight #1 seeds...or one of the eight #2 seeds...but a #3 seed, and placed in the same region as overall #1 Texas Woman's. That's...a choice.

Richmond just beat their conference leader. They went *up*, not down.
Bracketology: The top 16 remain the same, but UNC is inching closer to breaking in. Elsewhere, there's plenty of movement on the bubble, where Clemson is up but Mississippi State and Richmond are down. espn.com/espn/feature/story/…

Princeton blows out two teams by 20 points and drops three spots/one seed line, because fuck 'em I guess
Bracketology: Sometimes one big win can elevate a team off the bubble. Clemson and Virginia got those victories Sunday -- and turned the ACC into a nine-bid league for now. espn.com/espn/feature/story/…

Mississippi State loses at home by 15 to a 16-12 (4-9) Florida team and drops one entire spot
Bracketology: Can red-hot Duke get to a No. 2 seed? The Blue Devils have won 17 consecutive games and they're undefeated in ACC play. But someone ahead of them will have to stumble to move up from a 3-seed. espn.com/espn/feature/story/…

1. untrue 2. irrelevant 3. can be used for literally any type of playoff to say the playoff should be bigger, not an actual argument
One of the primary issues people raise with the 24-team playoff is that "8-4 Iowa" would make it. Well, "8-4 Iowa" also: 1. Came closest of any team to beating the undefeated national champions that season. 2. Sent the second-most players to the NFL Combine in the Big Ten. 3. Beat a Vanderbilt team that contended for a spot in the 12-team playoff. Brand bias and judging teams solely by their record have to end.
