The gov't has been very effective in pitting us against each other. We can/must do better - protect the rights of one group w/o doing so at the expense of another. Jews vs. African Americans, cis women vs. trans women. Rights are not a zero-sum game. youtu.be/T_tP8G6Ky1s

Be ready for Trump to start ramping things up after passing the horrendous tax/spend bill over the weekend - I break down one of the moves he's likely to start making - the unconstitutional suspension of laws passed by Congress that he doesn't "like". youtu.be/Xf8PMm4DqRA

Every day I wake up, "ok, what horrors today?" But @columbia's General Counsel must be feeling this in a very special way: she got hammered this week with multiple disasters. Yet, Felice Rosan has been behind pretty much all of Columbia's unforced errors. youtu.be/N-QlR5tg1mg

I break down: @zohrankmamdani is not a communist, there is a difference between socialism and communism, and he can't have his US citizenship stripped and be deported. Yet, the kinds of attacks against him should peak our attention. youtu.be/ISnoDVf6H3I

Reading the SCOTUS cases from this term as a whole, one take away: the dignity of & harm caused to some (eg trans ppl, preg ppl & POC) are invisible to the maj of the Ct, while the dignity & rights of others are hyper-visible (religious conservatives & white ppl).

I break down the Supreme Court's order yesterday that allowed the DHS to deport migrants to countries in which it is likely they will be tortured - in violation of US and int'l law. youtu.be/XCTSKViFhnM

What's the relationship of emancipation to freedom? Is being "freed" = to being "free"? My book, "Repair: Redeeming the Promise of Slavery's Abolition", seeks to answer, and in this talk I make the case for reparations for slavery. #Juneteenth youtu.be/Q5UU0Qzu8cg

What's at stake in the case challenging Trump's decision to federalize the National Guard in LA - the law, unfortunately, is pretty much on Trump's side, giving him unchecked power to decide when we're in an emergency situation. I explain. youtu.be/-FsIvKZ8ksw

SCOTUS decision in Skrmetti suffers from the worst kind of what Justice Blackmun called "sterile formalism", playing word games rather than acknowledging that the TN legislature targeted trans minors & the law's plain meaning is about denying medical care to trans minors.

Even the first sentences of the SCOTUS #Skrmetti decision renders #trans people, trans life, trans discrimination invisible. Trans people are not even legible to 6 members of the Supreme Court.

It's time to ratchet up our Spidey Sense ... stuff is happening that makes me want to urge all of us to be especially careful. youtu.be/z_rqPfk3ZZ4

In a big win, a federal judge granted Mahmoud Khalil’s request for a preliminary injunction, after concluding that he would continue to suffer irreparable harm if he remains detained.

Some personal news that's also professional: Today is my last day at the Deseret News. Tomorrow, I start my new job as managing editor of SCOTUSblog. I feel lucky to be moving from one dream job to another, and I will miss everyone at Deseret. It's been an amazing 11 years. 🐝

The gov't doesn't have the exclusive power to (mis)interpret the law, the people can give it meaning too under the principle of popular sovereignty. The law doesn't treat protests ag immigration raids as a "rebellion" & I explain why (and provide signs!). youtu.be/bIEhD2hw2oM

Reposting a 'splainer on the possibility of Trump federalizing the National Guard - given what's going on in LA right now.
I break down Monday's EO that signals the Trump admin's plans to deploy federal and Nat'l Guard troops to quell public protests - violating the 1878 Posse Comitatus Act, and what we might do to head this off. youtu.be/x7jInSCJrwM

Calling in the National Guard in LA to suppress protests against ICE arrests: yes we shd protest, but with awareness that this is part of the gov't's plan - provoking protests as a manufactured "crisis" that then necessitates a suspension of "normal law". youtu.be/MsuGWFgNg14
