Prof of Astrophysics/Astroparticle Physics @ U of Amsterdam All things black hole, Multi-WL/MM. Space, sci-fi, cats, valve amps, other unabashed geekery.
Science is for everyone, so it's really important that it is accessible. HT to @kimberlykowal and the NASA visualisation/sonification team for making 3D printable tactile images, and soundscapes, of #OurBlackHole! You can find them at: chandra.si.edu/photo/2022/sg…
This was hands down the funnest 🧪science🔭 panel I've ever done, getting to nerd out about the science of my fav sci-fi show @ExpanseOnPrime with one of its main actors (who should totally have a "nice off" with Keanu)!! Thx also to @TheExpanseGeeks for the cool swag! 🚀🙏

As if there wasn't enough to celebrate with the new @ehtelescope results today, I just saw that my @GRAPPAinstitute and @uva_api colleague @samayanissanke has just been awarded the @AAS_HEAD Mid-Career prize for her work on multi-messenger astrophysics!! 🎉🎉🎉
As the ring turns: our first @ehtelescope 2018 results are out and check it out: the ring has shifted around the black hole! We're not entirely sure what it means but we have a few ideas, stay tuned for the Theory & Interpretation paper coming soon!

I’m teaching a MSc course “Extreme Astrophysics” and a luminary of our field (Jocelyn Bell Burnell, discoverer of pulsars, for which her advisor got a Nobel…) gave a talk my students attended. Not only could they understand it, they also got this magnificent selfie with her!!
Looking for a postdoc position modelling (astrophysical) black holes in Amsterdam? Look no more! Please pass on to anyone you know who might be interested!

Another research group blog post, by recently started MSc student Ruby Duncan, with some personal reflections on research and some tips for citizen-scientists who want to get involved!
Reflections on Research, for scientists and non-scientists alike: seramarkoff.com/2023/12/refl…
This is a tardy reposting of a new PhD student in my group's first research blog post, Subhrat Praharaj! In this post he talks about sonification, where we 'convert' light into sound for eg. vision-impaired people to understand:

New research group blog by PhD student León S. Salas, that has some nice links to both science outreach about black holes using music as well as scientific visualisations!

It's probably too late for most people but after a summer hiatus we are back with research group blog posts, this time by PhD student @LSosapanta, who points out some interesting non-nuclear bomb work of Oppenheimer:

I've basically been out of here awhile, off to the blue skies for now. If you are looking for an invite to the other place, particularly if you are a PoC or other URM, lmk! I've got a few...
Inspirational weekend at #SciFoo where I met astrophysicist @ProfSeraMarkoff (1st black hole pic-LOVE her dress : ) and reproductive justice anthropologist/author of Period: @KateClancy, and many more! Gave lightning talk on HG and session Pregnancy, Periods, Perimenopause!
Check out the new research group blog post by PhD student @WangaMMulaudzi! Hot off the trail from two exciting international trips to Asia:

This was one of the nicest public events I've done, mixing science with incredible music by @arthurjeffes and mindblowing visuals by @JuliusHorsthuis! A great way to celebrate @GRAPPAinstitute at 10 years!
There's a really nice science event for the public in a few weeks at the lovely ARTIS, I'll be speaking along with several of my colleagues to celebrate our institute's 10th bday! Please join us!
If you are in Amsterdam in early July, please consider attending the public event at the wonderful ARTIS planetarium, as part of the GRAPPA10 conference (Mon 3rd July, 19:30). You can get your tickets here: artis.nl/en/what-do/agenda-a…
For the latest edition of our research group blog, postdoc Dr. Sheridan Lloyd tests whether ChatGPT is poised to replace him as an astrophysicist!
