Everett Alvarez High School absolutely blew us away with their Black Market Night & Movie Event. This powerful evening brought the community together to celebrate and support Black-owned businesses, enjoy a screening of Selma, and savor delicious meals from Black-owned catering services.
One of the most incredible highlights of the night? The presence of Mr. Melvin T Mason.
A true icon in the fight for justice, Mr. Mason joined the Black Panther Party in 1968, organized the Black United Farmworkers (UFW) support committee in 1970 with a blessing from César Chávez himself, and has worked tirelessly to advocate for racial equity, education, and social justice. His impact spans decades, from leading campaigns against police brutality to increasing college access for students of color. He even co-founded The Village Project, which provides culturally tailored services for African American and underserved communities. This is just a small glimpse of his legacy.
During the event, Mr. Mason delivered a powerful speech emphasizing the deep intersections of Black and Latino history and the importance of unity in fighting for justice.
"It is not in our interest to be divided. It is in our interest to get together and fight for the same rights."
His words were a perfect message for our Salinas community and a reminder of the strength in solidarity and the importance of honoring Black history together.
A huge shoutout to Everett Alvarez High School for putting together such a meaningful and inspiring event!
