I worked in bank liquidity and treasury for the better part of the last decade, and there is one very interesting risk factor from the SVB collapse that I do not think we have ever witnessed before in modern finance, a 🧵:

It seems we have finally remembered to run the societal playbook on the carbon footprint of AI. Don't post here anymore, but wanted to resurface this banger from 2023.
Chat GPT came so fast we forgot to run the societal playbook on it, one step of which is criticizing its carbon footprint. I marvel at our collective ability to demonize blockchains on this and then stay mum on AI. So I asked Chat GPT about its impact. This is what I learned:

So many AI commercials during thanksgiving football. Reminds me of late stage crypto bull market when we had Larry David FTX ads. It’s like they’re trying to make fetch happen.

Masterclass by @Kaylan_Sliney Brands are fleeing social like a reactor just melted down and sprinting straight into… newsletters. Beige blasts. Coupon-core aesthetics. “Community updates” that feel like HR memos. Everyone from retailers to NBA rookies thinks connection is long paragraphs and *~*vibes.*~*
I'm going to hold your hand when I say this: brands, athletes, creators -- nobody wants your Substack. Here's why:

Fuck a funnel, build a cult. Right on 🤘
10 Oct 2025
Cult brands don’t just rent attention, they convert it into evangelism. The old playbook was impressions → clicks → conversions.
Nah that’s out. Now it’s Identity → community → culture. Loyalty isn’t transactional anymore. It’s emotional. F*** a funnel. Build a cult.

When I say 'Fuck a Funnel, Build a Cult', it's not a hypothesis, but a tried and true method I've personally experienced. This is me 8 years ago. Bright-eyed, bushy-tailed, part-time Twitch streamer! Little did I know playing video games online would impact so much that I do today. There's so much I learned navigating the live streaming ecosystem. First and foremost, the power of community, and how you can harness it's power into a cult-like brand (in the best way possible). I started with 0 viewers, 0 followers. Just myself, an empty chat, and the game at hand. But I kept showing up as my authentic self, made a point to create a personal connection with my viewers, and build a place for people not just to watch, but to collaborate and convene. But it really started to take off when I built out my own private Discord channel for my most avid watchers. Here is where the bonds deepened and the incredible multiplier effect of community kicked in. The emotional connection between my viewers and me blossomed into such a shared sense of vision and purpose that they started to move mountains for me. My viewers, at no cost to me, started to: - Talk about me in other streams, referring my channel - Moderate my chat for bad behavior and be viewer support - Build all my creative assets including page banners and custom emojis And most importantly, they would show up every... single... day... no questions asked. I started to create an army of rain or shine supporters... and I knew something meaningful about every single one of them. I never got to scale that channel (I had kids, so naturally side hustles went by the wayside). So I don't know where it would have gone. But I'll never forget those lessons I learned, and the heartwarming experience it was. Fast forward to today. With my co-founder Kaylan Sliney, we built @magnetiq_xyz , a platform that helps growing CPG brands unlock the same magic as I experienced in my Twitch-streaming days. I'll never forget that time in my life, and I'm so excited to re-create it for so many others!

I got my ass kicked on this run, but it was hella fun and the UGC we compiled from use of the platform was legendary!
Every brand wants its own army of influencers, but paid shills have become easier to spot than a Canal Street Gucci belt. So how do you get people to show authentic love, without the cringe? Rollin Bagels and WellWell Studio pulled it off this weekend at their "Left for Crumbs 5K" in Brooklyn, in partnership with @magnetiq_xyz. With MAGNETIQ's tooling, the team was able to: - seamlessly capture attendee information (insights/analytics), - share behind-the-scenes footage of what makes their cult bagels so special (gated content), - collect uploads from everyone at the race (UGC Co-Lab), and - extra perks like a bonus bagel or t-shirt for submitting qualifying UGC (merch tool)! Scan QR, enter email, and begin the branded journey. It's that easy. As for UGC: the content is stored, viewable, and downloadable from central dashboard. No chasing people down for permission, or storing it in local folders on 8 interns' laptops across the globe. Current hot stats: - 45% runner activation opt-in (!) - Dozens of submissions (with more still rolling in) - Over 40 pieces of organic UGC content, so far - Happy runners who left with a full belly, new friends, and a lot of extra swag. Plus, @ProfessorStam and I got to (quite literally) race each other to the finish line. Something something 'the founders that suffer together'...?

Bruh, I'm sorry, but when I get sent a random newsletter I've never subscribed to before from Substack, I'm pressing the big, fat, SPAM button. Even if it's interesting. I get recommended enough crap via socials, I can't have that invading my inbox as well. Good riddance.

Once I open up your eyes to what we're building, you're going to be seeing it in whispers in every part of your life. Digital marketing is very broken right now, but everyone's too scared to talk about it because they don't know where to go next. Soon... @RAnSacks

Friendly reminder. When building tech, UI/UX is just as important as the code. It's always such a shame to see people build really powerful tools, but no one uses them because their UI/UX is such a confusing, messy disaster. I'm looking at you, all of crypto 🫠.

It’s time to get rid of engagement based algos on socials. We’re starting to manifest the real world consequences of elevating the most controversial content to the broadest of audiences. It means no more “for you” feeds and back to chronological content based on who you follow. I think it’s what we all secretly desire anyway. Solution is easy. Slap section 230 on anything curated by an engagement based algo. Deem that to be editorial. Then anything that is opt in and produced directly by who you follow is not. This doesn’t have to be hard.

To my marketers on here. Are you invested in building a cult brand? Or does it feel like something that is too abstract and complex to focus meaningful energy on.

If I were running a beverage brand looking to differentiate from my competitors, here's what I'd do step-by-step: 1️⃣ Identify the most creative and popular ways my product is used. Maybe it's a key ingredient of a mocktail, used in cooking recipes, or pairs well in special situations. 2️⃣ Create content around it, but don't release it on to socials! Maybe it's recording recipes or building out instructional PDFs on how to use it.
