AUGER Project is an @EPAResearchNews funded project investigating the peatland properties influencing greenhouse gas emissions and removals @Flo_RenouWilson
9. And recent work by @ProjectAuger estimates that Irish peatlands store a staggering 2.2 billion tonnes of carbon. However, less than 15% of Irish peatlands are in near-natural state, and the area actively sequestering carbon is likely to be even less.

Robust results from 5 years monitoring confirms that rewetting drained bogs 1) reduce C emissions 2) establish optimal conditions for C sequestration & 3) set the site on a climate cooling trajectory.

The AUGER report is out just in time to celebrate #WorldWetlandsDay2022
Irish bogs are the main subclass of wetlands in Ireland
--> 1ha of near intact raised bog store 3000 tonnes of carbon
We need to keep this carbon locked up as well as bring back clean water and biodiversity
This week #EGU20 we presented provisional results from the @ProjectAuger with our postdoc @APremrov gave insights into peatland biogeochemical modelling of CO2 using ECOSSE process based model. Our PhD Kilian Walz uncovered the factors affecting carbon stocks in Irish peatlands
Natural regeneration of tropical #peatlands is possible! #Birds and #mammals disperse thousands of #seeds!
What do we do? - Identify and protect remaining forest patches, block canals in these patches, let nature do its thing!

A step closer to managing grassland to reduce GHG emissions: our paper is one of the first studies demonstrating manipulation of C:N:P ratio can reduce N2O emissions from grasslands. Well done Rosie O'Neill for a first PhD paper @UCDSBES

Considering a PhD in EnvHist? Trinity Centre for Environmental Humanities seeks applicants for fully-funded 4-year award to start a PhD related to the project: ‘Peat mining as an unwritten chapter in the fossil fuel age’ led by Dr Katja Bruisch.

#WorldSoilDay tomorrow 5 Dec, peatlands is our biggest store of carbon also in Ireland; From the atmosphere perspective, locking it in is just as good as trying to plant trees somewhere else. theguardian.com/environment/…
5 Dec is #WorldSoilDay. No #soil = no food, no carbon sink, no ecosystem services, no life, no future.
Wet #peatlands soil = better chance to reduce climate chaos; cleaner air; more ecosystem services, better future
@EPAResearchNews@UCDEarth
Drained peat soils are a worldwide problem. German drained organic soils emit more than 55 Mt CO2-eq. per year. This is equivalent to around 6.6% of the national GHG emissions in 2014.
