George W. Bush was right about marriage. It should not be understated just how abruptly these radical changes have been imposed over the past 20 years. Never forget how suddenly the entire Democratic Party conveniently all changed their minds on this issue in 2012/13.
It's 2006, and gay marriage is still illegal in every single Scandinavian country. The only U.S. state with legal gay marriage is Massachusetts. It's still illegal in the other 49.

U.S. President George W. Bush proposes a Constitutional Amendment to ban same-sex marriage. In his weekly radio address, President Bush formally defined marriage as a "union between a man and a woman" and proposed a "Marriage Protection Amendment". In a speech to the press, he said "45 of the 50 states have either a state constitutional amendment or statute defining marriage as a union of a man and a woman. These amendments and laws express a broad consensus in our country for protecting the institution of marriage. The people have spoken. Unfortunately, this consensus is being undermined by activist judges". A recent Gallup poll showed that 59% of Americans were against validating gay marriages by law. Any such amendment would need two-thirds approval in the House of Representatives (290 out of 435) and the Senate (67 out of 100) as well as the approval of three-fourths of the state legislatures (38 out of 50). A similar amendment was defeated in 2004.

Congratulations to Ken Paxton on his victory. We would also like to pay tribute to John Cornyn for his years of service in the Senate. He will be missed. But now let's unite behind the Republican nominee and defeat Talaciro in November!
We are officially endorsing @JohnCornyn for Senate. He is a reliable conservative who has served with unparalleled competence and integrity. But regardless of who wins this runoff: let's unite behind the nominee, beat Talaciro in November, and maintain our Republican majority!

President Bush meets with UK Prime Minister Tony Blair at the White House. In a joint statement, the two world leaders said: "The United States has no closer ally than the United Kingdom. U.S. and U.K. forces are fighting terror in Afghanistan, Iraq, and around the globe. The Prime Minister and the President discussed ways to strengthen defense cooperation." "The two leaders are pleased to announce that the United States and United Kingdom recently signed an agreement that allows appropriately cleared British and U.S. personnel to use the same computer network to access military and intelligence information and other planning tools to support joint military operations in the defense of freedom." "Additionally, the leaders recognize that as American and British soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines are right now standing together in harm's way, we must plan for the future capabilities that will enhance our ability to cooperate. Both governments agree that the UK will have the ability to successfully operate, upgrade, employ, and maintain the Joint Strike Fighter such that the UK retains operational sovereignty over the aircraft. Further, both governments agree to protect sensitive technologies found within the Joint Strike Fighter program. Together, we are working out the details, while remaining committed to these principles." "Finally, the President and Prime Minister have a shared view that we need to continue to strengthen and deepen the relationship between our defense establishments to achieve fully interoperable forces and to leverage the respective strengths of U.S. and U.K. industries. The Prime Minister and President look forward to new ways we can achieve that goal."

During the third presidential debate in 2000, Al Gore walked across the stage to stand right next to George W. Bush while he was answering a question about the Patient Bill of Rights. โ  โ  The moment became iconic when Bush interrupted his speech to give Gore a dismissive, mocking nod, which the audience greeted with laughter and which critics later deemed a tactical error on Goreโ€™s part.โ  โ

It was wonderful for Sandy and I to cast our ballot in the Republican primary runoff today in Austin as early voting begins. Early voting continues through this Friday. I appreciate the support of my friend Congressman Michael McCaul in this race and his friendship of many years. I would be honored to earn your early vote this week to be the GOP nominee for U.S. Senate. #txsen

The U.S. Senate votes to set English as the national language. "We're free to say what we want, speak what we want, but it is our national language," said Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN). The amendment was proposed by Senator Jim Inhofe (R-OK), and passed by a vote of 62โ€“35. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) accused the Inhofe amendment of being racist, adding that "Everybody who speaks with an accent knows that they need to learn English just as fast as they can". The Senate also approved a weaker, less-binding alternative declaring English the "common and unifying" language of the nation on a 58-to-39 vote, which was proposed by Senator Ken Salazar (D-CO). The question of which version survives will be decided by the House of Representatives.
