A closer look at guardianship and fiduciary services in Hawaii:
Hawaii faces growing demand for guardianship and conservatorship services amidst an aging population. One key player is Maximum Legal Services Corporation (MaxCorp).
MaxCorp began in 1988–1989 as a spin-off from the Legal Aid Society of Hawaii. It was initially supported by loans and grants from the Hawaii Justice Foundation to fill gaps in fiduciary services.
Today it operates as a self-supporting 501(c)(3), funded almost entirely by fees from the assets it manages; through both court-appointed guardianship and conservatorship roles and private trust and estate administration.
Its volunteer board is led by retired Family Court Judge Allene Suemori as President.
Governing documents and financial statements are available only on a case-by-case basis upon request.
This mix of judicial connections, in a system where the Judiciary already controls appointments, monitoring, and sealed guardianship records, raises real questions about transparency and family involvement.

As a voice for elder justice, I’m watching closely how AI developments will affect the most vulnerable.
Banks and hospitals adopting AI faster is exciting for efficiency, but the downstream impact will be felt by American families navigating probate courts, guardianship battles, elder financial exploitation, and legal protections for seniors and the disabled.
Ambition is admirable, but not at the expense of human judgment and safeguards. The best applied AI will expand access to justice (faster, affordable reviews for families navigating estates, trusts, and protections) while keeping licensed professionals and empathy in the loop.
Rush to deploy without that human thread risks exasperating existing failures in systems that already harm families.
Excited for builders who prioritize both scale and the people at the end of the chain.
Families are the ultimate stakeholders.

The best founders don't end up in New York by accident. They come because this is where the hardest problems, the biggest customers, and the highest stakes are. The city demands you build something real.
I've always believed the best opportunities live between fields of expertise — not inside any single industry, but at the intersections. No city in the world has more intersections than New York. Finance and media. Healthcare and technology. The customers who need AI to actually work — banks, hospitals, newsrooms, asset managers — are all here, within a few miles of each other.
AI adoption is accelerating faster than any cycle I've seen. Per @PitchBook, AI is now 65% of NYC venture deal value, up from 16% six years ago. Early-stage funding hit $8.9B in 2025, up 50% in a year. Active unicorns: 32 in 2019, 159 today.
The infrastructure of a generational tech hub is being built in real time.
We're still early. The biggest deals haven't happened. The companies that define applied AI haven't been built.
The founders who build them will be ambitious. They'll want to be where the problems are.
They'll be here.

ASU missed a mandatory step.
Under AZ law ARS 12-1116, they cannot file for eminent domain without formal, statutory written final notice of intent to condemn. Rushing to court after informal talks is a due process violation.
File a motion to dismiss now and kill the lawsuit.

Arizona State University filed to use eminent domain to steal a 124 year old Phoenix home from a senior homeowner
The man who owns it is a 89 year old senior citizen who’s owned the home for 50 years
ASU says they need the land for their downtown health campus
ASU made multiple purchase offers, they’ve offered up to $850,000 for the home. The homeowner keeps refusing. So now they plan to just take the home with eminent domain
If eminent domain goes through he’ll be forced to accept the appraisal price
