I believe anybody in that headspace would fall for anyone, regardless of gender, in that moment.

It's not just an exploration of Shinji's sexuality. It's not just that he may love boys, it's that he wants to be allowed to love somebody who gives him grace.
It's a lot deeper than just Shinji being gay, but outright denying it is just not understanding the subtext.
