Digital Product Passports (DPPs) are no longer theoretical. They’re real, they’re mandatory, and they’re arriving soon. Under the EU’s Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), DPPs will be required across 33 industries, with compliance deadlines starting in 2026. If you manufacture or sell physical products regulated by the ESPR on the EU market, this affects you - regardless of where your business is based. But herein lies an opportunity… DPPs aren’t just about compliance. They’re a powerful tool for: ✅ Sharing product data from throughout the product’s lifecycle ✅ Illustrating sustainability and recyclability metrics and circularity ✅ Achieving your ESG goals 🌍 That’s why at Provenant, we have built a robust Digital Product Passport SaaS platform to help organisations create, configure, and deploy DPPs at scale. 🔹 EU-aligned 🔹 Expert-led 🔹 Embedded in the DPP ecosystem If you’re looking to prepare your business for Digital Product Passports and ESPR compliance, Provenant is your partner for success. Recycled content percentage. Scrap classification. End-of-life guidance. Recyclability score. These are just some of the circularity data points that will likely be mandatory in steel Digital Product Passports under the EU's ESPR regulation from 2027. The JRC published its full recommendations for mandatory and voluntary steel DPP data points in March 2026. 6️⃣Six of the eight European standards underpinning the Digital Product Passport (DPP) have now passed the formal vote of national standardisation institutes, covering the foundations from unique identifiers and data carriers to APIs and system interoperability. The two remaining standards tackle the most complex challenges: ➡️ Access rights and business confidentiality ➡️ Data authentication and integrity Once finalised, the framework will be complete, making DPPs about supply chain transparency, resource resilience, and fair competition across the EU market. The businesses preparing to implement DPP solutions that follow these standards now will be the ones best positioned for compliance, whilst also unlocking opportunities for value now. The EU DPP Registry goes live on 19 July 2026. But what is it, and what does your business need to know? The EU DPP Registry is the European Commission's central repository for Digital Product Passports, holding the unique identifiers and secure links that prove each passport exists, is authentic, and is valid for the EU market. Economic Operators remain responsible for the underlying data included in the DPPs, and a mandatory backup via an independent third-party provider. 📦 The EU's Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) came into force in February 2025 and compliance obligations kick in as early as August 2026. If your business places packaged goods on the European market, this affects you whether you're a manufacturer, importer, retailer, or packaging supplier. Digital Product Passports, already mandated under the EU's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), can serve as a powerful compliance tool for the PPWR too. They help organisations: ➡️ Embed traceable recycling and material data directly into a product's digital record ➡️ Back up green claims with verifiable, auditable evidence ➡️ Support reuse and refill systems with real usage tracking The PPWR and ESPR were designed to work in tandem. Companies investing in DPP capabilities now are positioning themselves to meet both sets of requirements while building a data-driven foundation for sustainable packaging.
