The X algorithm now is basically “You interacted with a tweet about ____, you must want to see 200 tweets saying exactly the same thing about ____”. The video algorithm is the same way but watching a video for like 5 seconds seems to have a similar effect to liking or bookmarking a tweet.
Because of this, derivative/stolen content is hyper amplified. You are rewarded for posting exactly like whatever other posts are popular at the time and punished for posting something that doesn’t capture very specific keywords or QT a tweet that has a lot of engagement. Clips of popular streamers are the prime example of something the X algorithm hyper amplifies because it is so easy to establish a connection between one clip of a streamer and another
The algorithm doesn’t just change the way people post and encourage slop, it also significantly worsens the experience of a tweet/video consumer. Did you watch a clip from a livestream for more than 5 seconds? The algorithm thinks you would like to see the exact same clip posted by 5 different clipper accounts. The algorithm also thinks you would like to see every single clip from whatever streamer unless you manually specify that you are not interested multiple times.
You are forced to have discipline in order to keep your feed from becoming entirely ruined. This is an awful consumer experience for an app that is used for entertainment and sometimes productivity. Why should an app I use for entertainment feel like work? Why is it my responsibility to make so many deliberate, conscious decisions in order to maintain my feed? I want to occasionally doom scroll without my entire feed becoming useless for a week afterward
Monetization amplifies the slopification. Very few bigger accounts just post for the love of the game anymore. Tweeting is business now and it pays well to post slop
Content theft is a losing game.
We already have duplicate detection for videos working in internal testing.
Impressions & engagements on reposts will accrue to the original author.
