The biggest misconception is that there’s nothing we can do yet about the quantum threat.
People assume quantum computers will show up one day, break encryption, and everyone will just have to deal with it.
That’s not true.
We already have ways to protect data today.
A lot of the conversation around quantum security sounds overly technical, but some of the first steps are actually pretty simple. There are newer security standards and updated encryption methods that organizations can already start using without rebuilding everything from scratch.
That matters because of something called “harvest now, decrypt later.”
It means bad actors can steal encrypted data today, hold onto it for years, and wait until more powerful quantum computers are available to unlock it later.
And the timeline is getting closer.
Right now, many experts expect that level of quantum computing capability could arrive around 2029.
The bigger problem isn't the lack of solutions because they actually do exist but a lot of organizations still don’t realize it.
